Virtual career fair to assist women seeking non-traditional jobs, agency says - Rome Sentinel

UTICA — The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) grant program will host a women-focused virtual job fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

The WANTO program, administered by the Workforce Development Board, Herkimer, Madison and Oneida Counties, Inc., focuses on helping women gain employment in nontraditional occupations, including trades, information technology, advanced manufacturing, transportation, public safety, and agriculture, among other potential occupations.

Nontraditional occupations is defined by the U.S. Department of Labor as any industry in which females make up 25% or less of the workforce.

“The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations grant is offering several opportunities to train and retain women in quality pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, says WANTO Pre-Apprenticeship Coordinator Sommer Edwards.

“The goal is to provide a stepping stone for women to secure employment within a non-traditional career. Current WANTO participants have recently completed pre-apprenticeship training, and are actively seeking employment through a number of our partnered employers,” Edwards added.

“WANTO’s most recent success story highlighted Khadijah Ballard who stated, ‘I was allowed to prove people wrong, and gain confidence in my ability to gain financial security as well as provide an avenue for me to have another chance at success, in a judgment-free zone.’ WANTO staff, along with its counterparts look forward to continued success among its participants as they embark on contributing to a more inclusive and equitable workforce.”

WANTO serves a 17-county region in central New York, including Herkimer, Lewis, Oneida and Madison counties.

Job seekers and employers throughout the entire 17-county region are invited to register.

The job fair is free to job seekers and employers on a user-friendly platform.
