KALAMAZOO, MI — Nicole Triplett began her wine production business out of her home three years ago as she slowly began to introduce the Roché Collection to wine lovers and novices alike.
It wasn’t long before she got the word out. As quick as word spread, demand grew, prompting Triplett to purchase a piece of property, at 1319 Portage St. in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood.
There, Triplett — the first Black female wine maker in the state of Michigan — turned her passion for entertaining, as well as a desire to bring more diversity and inclusion into the wine industry, into a reality by opening Twine Urban Winery last March.
Calling it “an urban twist on the traditional tasting room,” Triplett offers a judgement-free space where people can come together and enjoy Michigan-made wine in an approachable fashion.
Offering around 20 varietals of wine from the Roché Collection, among them the popular peach mango, Triplett also serves wine cocktails, slushies and unique drinks such as merlot-infused hot tea.
Patrons can enjoy traditional tastings, where they stand at the bar and enjoy six one-ounce pours, or they can have a seat and order everything from avocado toast to charcuterie to wine and cheese or wine and chocolate pairing boards.
There’s also the Twine Cocktail Tower, which consists of five different cocktails brought to the table, perfect for a girl’s night out, she said.
“No matter what type of drinker you are, you can still sit at the same table as someone who may be more traditional and is enjoying a Bordeaux, while someone else is enjoying our wine slush explosion, which is one of our top sellers and is topped with different candies,” Triplett said.

Twine, located in Edison’s Washington Square, also offers bottomless-mimosa brunches from noon-4 p.m. on every third Sunday. Brunch items include fried chicken, bacon, fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, fruit and waffles.
Triplett, who also is a practicing clinical psychologist, developed an interest in wine production after visiting wineries, going to tastings with friends and seeing interesting conversations develop over wine.
She said she has found it difficult to be taken serious in an industry where most winemakers do not look like her and are also traditionally male. But as her tasting room comes up on its first anniversary, her relationship-building, persistence and craftsmanship has led to the Roché Collection continuing to expand its footprint throughout the region.
Roché Collection wines are available in eight states and can be found on the shelves at Meijer stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, as well as other stores throughout Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas and California. Locally, Triplett’s wine can be found at Midtown Fresh, Park Street, and City Centre markets, as well as Harding’s and J &B Discount Liquor.
Twine Urban Winery is open from noon-8 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, and has limited seating and tasting space available. Reservations are heavily recommended to guarantee space, and can be made online at www.therochecollection.com/tasting-room/.
Triplett and her business will be featured on John McGivern’s new TV show, called Main Streets, that debuted this January. Kalamazoo is among 13 Midwestern cities the show is visiting this season. Also featured on the Kalamazoo episode will be Layla’s Cool Pops and TNT Little Brothers BBQ.
