Morgan State in 6th Place after Saturday's Traditional Matches at the James Brown Invitational - Morgan State Bears

TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 12, 2022) - The Morgan State Lady Bears are in 6th place after Saturday's traditional game matches. They have a total pinfall of 9,559 for their two days of competition for a 191.2 overall team average. Even though they averaged 190.48 as a team for Saturday's traditional matches, they only have a 1-4 record to show for it on the day.

Highlights of Saturday's Traditional Matches:

  • Morgan State took #6 North Carolina A&T to the final frames in their match, rallying at the end but falling short by only eight pins (1,011 – 1,004).
  • Two players averaged over 200 for the games they bowled on Saturday. Cheyenne Washington averaged 202.8 for five games bowled and Aliya Adams averaged 205,0 for three complete games bowled.
Saturday's Traditional Matches:

Morgan State 1,035, #14 Delaware State 1,132         
The Bears ran into the Hornets in the first match and Delaware State shot their highest score of the day and the highest in the two days of bowling. The Bears bowled well averaging 207.0 as a team, but could not catch red hot Delaware State. All Morgan players contributed with nice games: La'Monique Berrios 233, Cheyenne Washington 226, Natalia Miranda Vega 202, Ashanti Fernandes 188 and Naomi Smith 186.               

Morgan State 910, Saint Francis (Pa.) 1,045
The next match saw the Red Flash catch fire and also throw their highest set of the day against Morgan State. They outpaced the Bears by mid-match however the Bears held strong in their scoring paced by Cheyenne Washington who bowled an excellent 247 game and Ashanti Fernandes with a 212. Natalia Miranda Vega added a 184 game.

Morgan State 1,004, #6 North Carolina A&T 1,012
Morgan State fell behind at the midway point of the match against the 6th ranked Aggies, but made the right adjustments and made a run at the end with the match being decided in the final frames. The Bear's scoring was led by Natalia Miranda Vega and Aliya Adams who both shot strong 243 games. La'Monique Berrios rolled a 182, Cheyenne Washington shot 177 and Ashanti Fernandes a 159.

Morgan State 932, Mount Aloysius 724
Morgan kept their focus in Match 4 with balanced scoring against Mount Aloysius. Bears scoring: Aliya Adams 209, Carrington Beaman 188, La'Monique Berrios 183, Cheyenne Washington 178 and Natalia Miranda Vega with a 174.

Morgan State 881, #10 Mount Saint Mary's 992       
In the final round of the day, #10 Mount Saint Marys stay consistent early and found their strings of strikes throughout the match to outpace the Lady Bears. Carrington Beaman led the Bears in scoring with a 203 game and Cheyenne Washington completed her solid five game set finishing with a 186 game.

North Carolina A&T holds the lead in the tournament 10,319. Tomorrow the Bears with face Maryland Eastern Shore in the first round of Best 4 of 7 Bracket play. UMES is in 5th place with a total pinfall of 9,697 and the Bears are in 6th with a pinfall of 9,559.

Here are the Traditional Averages for Morgan State for Saturday's matches:
Aliya Adams 205.0 for three games, Cheyenne Washington 202.8 for five games, Carrington Beaman 195.5 for 2 games, Natalia Miranda Vega 195 for five games, Ashanti Fernandes 186.33 for three games, La'Monique Berrios 181.4 for five games and Naomi Smith 150.5 for two games.

Coach Falbo states about the mixed day. "Day 2 saw us average over 194 for the first four matches and only one win to show for it. Other teams stepped up to their credit. Tomorrow is a new day. We'll stay believing in ourselves and plan to elevate our play tomorrow."

It was a special day at AMF Towson lanes prior to the action. Three Morgan State seniors were honored in the Senior Recognition ceremony. Amoura Whitney graduated from Morgan in December of 2021. She was a member of the Bear's teams from the fall of 2019 through the spring of 2021. Ashanti Fernandes will graduate in the Fall of 2022, so this is her final James Brown Invitational. Natalia Miranda Vega is a senior from Bogota, Colombia. Her family from Colombia came from overseas to support her in this tournament. All three ladies are valued members of the Morgan Family.

Tomorrow the Bears enter the Bracket Round Best of 7 Baker match play in 6th place. They will face UMES in the first match of the day. There will be three rounds of Baker play to determine final tournament standings.
