Several artists will be performing at the Lincoln Crossroads Music Festival this weekend- including the Kytasty Family Bandura Ensemble.
Julian Kytasty and his two nieces put on a Bandura performance for Nebraska Public Media’s Friday Live show. They played various compositions that were passed down by their Ukrainian family.
Julian said his great uncle was a composer for the instrument in the twentieth century, passing down many traditional tunes.
“Our instrument is the Bandura - a traditional instrument from Ukraine. Our family was very important in bringing this instrument to North America and establishing it here,” he said.
Julian explained how his father and uncle were once in a Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, passing down compositions for the family ensemble. He said they have not heard from family in Ukraine for several years.
“We have distant family on the paternal side, almost all of them are actually in occupied territory right now. We’ve really lost touch with them since 2014, he said. “This latest thing is just the latest phase of a war that's been going on for 8 years, and a struggle that's been going on for over 400.”
Julian and his family will be playing in the Lincoln Crossroads Music Festival on Saturday evening.
