Parade Company’s Pancake Breakfast is as traditional as parade itself - The Macomb Daily

America’s Thanksgiving Parade Presented by Gardner White is just about ready to rock and roll down Detroit’s Woodward Avenue.

But first the pancake breakfast.

Despite being held in the wee morning hours, hundreds of people attend the event every year not only for the pancakes and coffee but for a sneak peek at some of the new floats and the fun of watching their local business and community leaders doing their best to flip flapjacks without flopping.

In fact, the Parade Company’s annual Pancake Breakfast presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is as traditional as the parade itself.

“This is an event I look forward to every year because it marks the kickoff of the holiday season. Everyone loves a parade,” said Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller.

She and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel were among those from Macomb County Thursday invited to join in the fun of flipping flapjacks.

Among the new floats unveiled during the event was Huntington National Bank’s “Rooted Here.”

“Huntington National Bank is an extraordinary partner to our community,” Tony Michaels, The Parade Company CEO and president said in a news release. “Huntington National Bank is a big champion of Detroit  and its neighborhoods, and we are thrilled to debut their new float celebrating their deep commitment  to our city and state on Thanksgiving morning.”

On hand for the unveiling was the bank’s regional president Eric Dietz.

“At Huntington, our purpose is to make people’s lives better, help businesses thrive, and strengthen the communities we serve. The new Huntington float symbolizes our bank’s dedication  to Detroit. From our commitment to the Warrendale/Cody Rouge and Grandmont/Rosedale neighborhoods to the opening of our brand-new tower on Woodward Avenue, Huntington Bank is deeply  rooted in this great city,” said Dietz. “As the hometown bank of Detroit, we are proud to participate in the 96th America’s Thanksgiving Parade and look  forward to celebrating this beloved tradition on Thanksgiving day.”

There are nine new floats this year including Gardner White’s “It All Starts Here!” a vibrant float  representing some of the exciting things that happened first, in Detroit and Pets Supplies Plus’  “Let the Pets Play On!” which illustrates the local brand as the favorite neighborhood pet store. It says they live here, work here, and play  here!

Those who attended the breakfast got a sneak peek of the new floats that have been completed by The Parade Company artists, and their enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers who spend countless hours creating the Thanksgiving Day masterpieces. Huntington’s float alone is more than 120 feet long. The colorful float features a beautiful and robust vegetable garden. The huge fruit and vegetable baskets on the front of the float are large enough to fit 5,000 apples.

Tagging along behind that is a luminous second piece featuring 150 linear feet of lights used to create the illusion of water pouring out of a watering can. The third piece celebrates Huntington Bank’s commitment to Detroit with a replica of Huntington Tower, the company’s brand new 20-story office building downtown. The replica is so big — 28 feet high or about 1/8 of the height of the actual building — Dietz could actually use it as office space. These pieces are anchored by a scale model of Huntington Place and the  largest television screen in the parade, displaying high-definition graphics.

“Our Great City! Detroit” is the theme of America’s Thanksgiving Parade presented by Gardner White on Thursday, Nov. 24.

The show is traditionally featured on WDIV-TV (Channel 4) along with a one-hour syndicated national broadcast, reaching more than 185 television markets across the country. Paul W. Smith of WJR-AM (760) and Audacy WOMC-FM (104.3) also broadcast parade shows.

Live coverage kicks off at 6 a.m. with pre-parade coverage, followed by a parade pre-show beginning at 9 a.m. Detroit’s local coverage of the parade runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Listeners can also catch WJR’s Paul W. Smith’s pre-parade broadcast from 6 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. and WOMC’s live coverage overlooking the parade route from 10 a.m.- noon overlooking the parade route.

“Thanks to The Parade Committee and all the sponsors for putting on America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Miller added.
