John Tindall: In defense of traditional Thanksgiving - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Thanksgiving day should be more than the four Fs: food, family, friends and football. It should be a time of reflection and giving thanks to our Creator for all the blessings that He has given us.

The first “thanks giving” to God feast was 401 years ago, celebrated by the Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe. President Lincoln proclaimed it a national holiday in 1863.

Not everyone adheres to the traditional facts that were written down by the early colonists, however. Bishop E.W. Jackson (https://ift.tt/mlg0PFn) states the following in an email of Nov. 22:

“Thanksgiving is nearly upon us, and one would think that this most American of holidays needs no defense.

“But leftist educators, taking their cues from Marxist propagandists like Howard Zinn, are using Thanksgiving as an occasion to spread the lie that America’s founding was wicked and racist. Schoolchildren across the land are being taught that the Pilgrims deliberately killed meek, welcoming Indians and that the first Thanksgiving was a myth.

“Alternately, children are taught that the Pilgrims, who left England for religious freedom, staged a Thanksgiving feast to thank the Indians for saving them, not God.

“Zinn, whose ‘People’s History of the United States’ presents colonists as evil and Indians as peaceful, ignores horrific massacres committed by some of the Indian tribes. He discounts the Pilgrims’ Biblically-centered justice system in which several white colonists were hanged for killing an Indian.

“It’s horrifying to hear otherwise bright young people … mouthing Zinn’s and other leftists’ profoundly dishonest propaganda.”

Bishop Jackson is also a vocal opponent of critical race theory. Take time to read his personal history, and you will understand why.

I feel sad and sorry for those in our country who have been misled as to our country’s true history because they know not what they believe. I will save that discussion for another time.

I am thankful that we still have some free speech allowed in our country. Right now I would rather share part of another email I received on Nov. 22 from Ken Buck, the 4h District’s congressman (includes east side of Loveland).

“This week, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with our family and friends, I am reminded of the many blessings God has given us here in the United States and in the Fourth District — blessings of freedom and prosperity that flourish across our nation.

“United together in gratitude for these blessings, we acknowledge the incredibly brave patriots who keep America safe and free. I want to share my profound appreciation to members of our United States Armed Forces, law enforcement, and first responders who ensure that America remains safe and a symbol of freedom for all.

“After all, I believe the true meaning of Thanksgiving is to realize all the ways we have been blessed and to give thanks for our abundance — and in God’s Country, we have much for which to be thankful.

“I know I am grateful for the continued opportunity to represent the Fourth District in Washington. It is a privilege to be your voice in Congress and to serve you every day.”

Thanks, Ken!

Thanksgiving equals gratitude, my word for the day.

Pastor Gregory Dickow puts it like this in an Nov. 22 email:

“Gratitude for what God has done is the engine that drives what God will do. When we remember what He has done, it infuses us with strength to not quit when life presents challenges.

Keeping gratitude at the center of our lives every day is vital and also the antidote to depression and oppression — even the seasonal variety.”

Thanks, Pastor Greg!

Take some time this Thanksgiving to reflect on all that God has done for you and all the blessings you have received. You could be in the Ukraine.

So this Thanksgiving Day and every day, go forth rejoicing that you live in the USA so you can be a blessing to others. Don’t just say you are grateful/thankful, do something for others.

It’s like telling someone you love them, and then you don’t show it. Try that with your spouse and see if they believe your words. Not!

Turn thanks giving into action. Let God bless others through you.

Just do it!
