Russia’s pollock companies are under increasing pressure to find new markets for its products as traditional mainstays China and South Korea continue to pose COVID-19-related logistics challenges for the industry.
One of those potential markets, according to the Pollock Catcher Association (PCA), is Indonesia, a country of more than 250 million people and a growing appetite for protein.
China and South Korea account for 80 percent and 60 percent, respectively, of Russia's overall seafood exports, and serve both as reprocessing hubs as well as significant consumer markets in themselves.
"The situation has forced us to look for additional sales markets, one of which may be Indonesia," Alexey Buglak, president of PCA, told IntraFish.
Indonesia, made up of some 17,000 islands, is the largest economy in Southeast Asia.
Population 267 million (July 2020 est.)
Population Growth 0.79% (2020 est.)
Urban population: 56.6% of total population (2020)
Rate of urbanization: 2.27% annual rate of change (2015-20 est.)
GDP (Purchasing Power Parity): $3.25 trillion
GDP per capita: (Purchasing Power Parity) $12,400 (2017 est.)

In 2019, Indonesian seafood imports reached 117,000 metric tons, worth $300 million (€253 million).
"Russia’s seafood supplies could have made up more than 25 percent of Indonesia’s overall seafood imports," Buglak said.
The PCA has appealed to Russia’s Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (Rosselkhoznadzor), Federal Fishery Agency (Rosrybolovstvo) and Russia's Ministry of Industrial Trade to speed up work on opening Indonesia to Russian seafood products.
Russia has not yet concluded an intergovernmental agreement with Indonesia for direct seafood supplies for several years.
Rosselkhoznadzor most recently began petitioning Indonesian authorities for an agreement in 2017 with no response, but told PCA it plans on raising the issue again in the near future.
