BEAR LAKE — After missing last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the popular Bear Lake Days celebration will be returning with four days of fun from July 8-11.
Bear Lake Days organizers announced they have scheduled all the regular events from past years. Some festivals are going with limited schedules this year, but now that state restrictions have been lifted the committee decided to bring back all the fun acts of the past.
"It is not going to be reduced at all and we are going for a full schedule," said committee member Kris Buckner. "We wanted to have a good event, and at this point if people still don't feel comfortable we respect that as everybody has a choice if they want to come or not."
Buckner said the response from the community to the news about Bear Lake Days has been outstanding.
"We have had people step up and want to volunteer for the events," he said. “We are hoping for a good event.”
One of the things the committee took into consideration in holding the event was they didn’t want to go two consecutive years without a Bear Lake Days event.
“My fear was if you skip two years, you are going to have a hard time getting them back,” said Buckner. “The people putting it on also get rusty as we struggled a little this year after a one-year layoff. We take really good notes on what we have to do for the next year and that saved us for this year, but if it had been two years we would have really struggled to get this back.”
Buckner said like everyone else they also were watching if there was going to be any state restrictions at a time when they are usually planning for the next year. However, when everything was lifted, they went to work getting everything together.
This year’s event begins from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday with the Pre-Party at the Grille 44, which will feature the sounds of the popular group Awesome Distraction.
Friday the action picks up with some fun kids' events like “Why I love Bear Lake” (noon to 5 p.m.) where kids can drop off pictures and artwork they created to Saddle Up and receive a free slushy in the process.
“That is really a pretty cool event that the kids seem to enjoy,” said Buckner.
There also will be a photo contest from 8 a.m. Friday and running to Sunday at noon. Last year's winning entries will be auctioned off at the Trigenta auction on Saturday.
Friday is also the first of two days of the Kids Fishing Contest on Bear Lake that will begin at Hopkins Park starting at 8 a.m.
Also taking place — from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday — is the Kids Pot Pals Garden at the Pleasanton Valley Greenhouse. For $15 kids can create their own "bee-utiful" bumblebee, lady bug or butterfly pot pal all while learning about these unique bugs. There also will be a kid’s scavenger hunt from 5-7 p.m. under the tent in town.
There will be plenty of activities for adults starting at 4 p.m. on Friday with a two-person golf scramble at the Bear Lake Golf Course. Plenty of good food will be available from 4:30-6:30p.m. at the annual Pig Roast at the Bear Lake United Methodist Church.
The Horse Pull competition will return at Correct Compression on U.S. 31 South from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and a boat parade starts at the boat launch in Hopkins Park at 7 p.m.
“This is like our third year for that horse pulling event, and it is real popular,” said Buckner.
Saturday is the big day for Bear Lake Days featuring something fun to do for all ages. Some of the popular returning events are the car show, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the old bar parking lot and the 7 a.m. start of the 5K run/walk at Hopkins Park.
The popular Lumberjack Show returns to the Village Parking Lot with shows slated for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. as people are advised to bring their own chair to watch the free event.
“This is the third year for the Lumberjack Show, and that is always really cool,” said Buckner.
Also throughout the day in the heart of the village will be food vendors, kids’ activities, a book sale, a Loop the Lake Bike Ride, arts and crafts vendors, carriage rides corn hole tournament, watermelon eating contest and more.
A dunk tank sponsored by the Filer Credit Union will also be held from noon to 3 p.m. featuring the chance to dunk a few local celebrities in the process.
“There will be some people like Manistee County Sheriff Brian Gutowski who is going to be in the dunk tank,” said Buckner.
The world renowned Scottville Clown Band will be putting on a concert at the Blarney Castle Warehouse from 6-7:30 p.m. and people are asked to bring their own chair to enjoy the music.
This year the grand parade will be held at 8 p.m. through the downtown area, and serving as grand marshal is Larry Keillor. Following the parade until dusk when the fireworks take place over the lake there will be the Cook Family Concert under the tent.
“We tried to keep a lot of the events at the same time they always took place like parade and the fireworks,” said Buckner. “It’s kind of what we always have done, and it should be lots of fun.”
Buckner said they are hoping for four good days of weather.
“If the weather doesn’t cooperate it is hard to run an event like this so we are hoping for the best,” he said.
