Traditional Fourth of July celebration held at St. Paul's Church in Mount Vernon - News 12 Bronx

St. Paul’s Church in Mount Vernon is celebrating Independence Day with traditions it has held up for the last 139 years.

The celebration includes music from a live orchestra and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

"We're at a setting that really recalls the events of 1776, on the day that we're celebrating, people lived in this town, they were gathering around here, they were mulling over the tremendously important decision of independence,” says David Osborn, St. Paul's Church site manager.

The event also features the traditional 13 tolls of the historic St. Paul's Church bell.

"We're going to be ringing a bell that goes back to colonial times—1758. We ring it 13 times for the original 13 states,” Osborn says.

The historic landmark, which served as a military field hospital during the American Revolution, is also host to a cemetery that dates back to 1704.

If you are unable to make it to Sunday’s celebration, you can schedule a self-guided tour of the site Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
