While the last two years of Freddy Awards have been anything but normal due to COVID-19, Easton’s State Theatre is once again getting ready to start the high school theater awards cycle.
The theater put out a call for evaluators for this year’s program that honors the best in local high school music theater. Applications and information about the role can be found on the Freddys website, freddyawards.org. The deadline to apply is Sept. 21. Currently, the 2022 Freddy Awards ceremony is scheduled for May 26.
This doesn’t mean a traditional Freddys in the spring of 2022 is a foregone conclusion — the theater’s president and CEO, Shelley Brown, said that they did the same thing this time last year (and every year) despite much more uncertainty surrounding the possibility of even having high school performances to evaluate.
Putting together a team of evaluators is just the first step. The Freddy team then reaches out to area schools with a simple question. “We ask the schools ‘is it your intention to do a musical?’” Brown said. “They tell us yes or no, they tell us what it is if they know it, and if they don’t, they say ‘to be determined.’
“I’m guessing we’ll get back a bunch of ‘to be determined,’” she said.
Brown and the Freddy team don’t know the status of high school theater and chorus groups as the in-person school year starts, and a decision likely won’t be made until later in the fall or early winter. The “Freddy season” starts around February, and there’s no telling what the COVID-19 situation may look like. But they’ll put together their team of evaluators after the Sept. 21 application deadline, and whatever happens, “we’ll be ready,” she said.
Ideally, the program can put on a traditional awards show come 2022. In 2020 and 2021, the Freddy Awards were less an awards show and more a broadcasted showcase for high schoolers. Back in May of this year, the show did feature musical performances at the State Theatre (and on its roof), but they were rehearsed and recorded by area students in the weeks before the broadcast, rather than compilations of a months-long musical theater season.
The upcoming Freddy Awards will be slightly more notable, as it is the 20th anniversary of the program, which started in 2003. That’s a big deal, and Brown does feel some desire and urgency to celebrate the milestone with a traditional ceremony, but it’s not her primary concern.
“We will joyfully celebrate 20 years,” she said, “but more importantly we just want to get those kids back on that stage. We want them back on their stages, and then ultimately ours. The most important thing is that they get the theater experience.”
