KALAMAZOO, MI — After a one-year pandemic-induced hiatus, a Kalamazoo Thanksgiving tradition returns as Greensky Bluegrass heads home for the holiday to play two nights at the State Theatre.
The hard-touring act, which began as a trio playing open mic nights in Kalamazoo in 2000, had played six consecutive years at the Kalamazoo State Theatre on the holiday weekend prior to the pandemic hitting the pause button on live music more than a year-and-a-half ago.

Previously, Greensky had been a staple at Bell’s Brewery over the holiday weekend.
The band and venue announced Tuesday that Greensky would headline the venue Friday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27. A pre-sale ticket lottery is underway and the public on sale is slated for Friday, Aug. 27.
“It’s been entirely too long, Kalamazoo,” founding member, mandolist and singer-songwriter Paul Hoffman said in a statement. “I remember always being excited to come home from tour with all our new discoveries to share with you. It’s been two years. Far too long and the feeling hasn’t changed. We’ve missed you! Let’s get back to the music together.”
Amid its upcoming fall tour, the band, which also features founding members David Bruzza on guitar and Michael Arlen Bont on banjo, along with Anders Beck on dobro and Mike Devol on bass, will take center stage for a three-night, headlining run at Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre from Sept. 17-19.
They are also scheduled to play two nights at Nashville, Tennessee’s historic Ryman Auditorium on Oct. 29-30.
Arguably the No. 1 question State Theatre marketing director Harry Phillips got throughout the pandemic was whether the band would return to the Kalamazoo State Theatre this November.
“For us, it’s the traditional Thanksgiving shows,” Phillips said. “What a great thing to be thankful for this year, that we’ve got Greensky weekend back. We’re super excited to be able to bring them back and have those shows again this year after missing them last year.”
A fan club presale lottery period is open now and will close on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. EST. A venue presale is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. And the public on sale is slated for Friday at 10 a.m. at which point tickets will also be available fee-free at the State Theatre box office.
Tickets are $36.50 per show or $70 for a two-day pass. Click here for more information.
