sitting at an altitude of 800 meters, surrounded by mountains, clouds and mist, cheng chung design (CCD) has transformed the iconic yungu hotel into the ‘sunriver resort & spa‘ located in huangshan, china. the pre-existing hotel, which has been in use for more than three decades, has been designed to incorporate traditional architectural elements, while perfectly blending into the natural surroundings, thus embodying the traditional chinese philosophy of ‘unity of man with nature’.

CCD has carried out the renovation with the aim to give the well-known hotel a brand-new image, while completely preserving its original architecture. the studio has taken into consideration the favorable natural resources of mt. huangshan (also known as yellow mountain), the local culture, the health maintenance ideas and classical chinese culture, as well as the inherited hui-style architectural style. in a natural and affordable luxury manner, the renovation has provided the resort with a new elegance, generating a desired mountain-based living environment.
distinct architectural elements, such as corbiesteps, gray roofing tiles, open-air atriums and verandas, were preserved to the greatest extent. meanwhile, modern design approaches were employed in order to highlight the unique historical ambience. specifically, the design team used neat and staggered wall lines, gray tiles, white walls, as well as elegant hues.
the scattered buildings that form the resort complex, the interior spaces and the gardens penetrate and complement each other. natural views, picturesque scenes and spatial atmosphere enable the guests to feel calm and carefree. open-air atriums, corridors and courtyards link the surrounding guest rooms, making visitors feel like they’re in an ancient local village. each room enjoys a good view to the yards and mountains, with windows framing fascinating outdoor landscape which changes throughout the year.
featuring exquisite details, a tranquil ambience and artistic design languages, the small-scale gardens offer varying visual experiences at every step. the guest room design draws inspiration from the vibrant green scenery of huangshan in early spring. finally, the transparent space blends with vigorous landscape, which refreshes the mind.
subtle adjustments were made to better meet the living demands of those who seek a modern aesthetic. furniture and furnishings are characterized by neat and modern lines, which harmoniously merge with the classic elegant atmosphere. modernity and coziness are incorporated into old architectural spaces, sparking a dialogue between new and old, present and past, as well as space and time.
