ACC’s attempt to preserve traditional rivalries rebuffed by SEC - Tallahassee Democrat

The SEC has answered and rebuffed the ACC’s attempt to preserve traditional rivalries between the conferences.

What we have now is an escalating behind-the-scenes rivalry between the two conferences.

The ACC’s plan to get out ahead of the chaos that is becoming the 2020 season due to the lingering coronavirus pandemic worked. Now, it’s the SEC that is responsible for forcing four Thanksgiving weekend rivalry games into a one-year hiatus.

The ACC’s model of 10 conference games and a “plus-one” announced Wednesday left room for Florida to play Florida State, Clemson to face South Carolina, Georgia Tech to meet Georgia and Louisville to battle Kentucky.

It also put the SEC in the position to come off as the bad guys.

That’s what happened Thursday when the SEC announced its teams would play 10 games, all in conference.

The ACC, SEC and Big 12 appeared to unite after the Big Ten and Pac-12 made their early announcements to play conference games only. But Pat Forde of SI.com reported Thursday that SEC athletic directors met and agreed on a 10-game, conference-only schedule Wednesday that was awaiting approval by the presidents.

But before that could be announced, ACC presidents quickly pushed out their model Wednesday, one that also included the most powerful brand in college football – Notre Dame – as a conference member for 2020.

By adding the “plus-one,” the ACC put pressure on the SEC to be the conference that ultimately killed those longtime rivalry games that define college football for the season.

The ACC model is the most ambitious right now. No matter what happens with the Big 12, the league, and its commissioner, John Swofford, come out the big winners in the pandemic revamp - and not just for allowing its members to add the one non-conference game, but for bringing in Notre Dame, even if it is for one season.

But these models will mean nothing if COVID-19 forces the sport to shut down entirely. If not, and if we are fortunate enough to have a college football season, here are more winners and some losers of the ACC’s new (hopefully one-year) plan:

Winners

Notre Dame: The Irish had games against Wisconsin, Stanford and USC canceled; and needed help with the schedule, especially considering they should contend for a playoff spot. Along comes the ACC and now Notre Dame adds an expected ranked team to boost its resume (at North Carolina) and a high-profile/very winnable game at home against Florida State. The Irish also added Syracuse and Boston College. Additionally, Notre Dame will benefit more from sharing ACC revenue than the ACC will for sharing the Irish’s $15 million from NBC.

Orange Bowl: No major bowl has suffered more in recent years. With Clemson becoming a yearly playoff participant and the rest of the league in a down cycle, the OB has been forced to take the next best ACC option (in years it is not hosting a semifinal game), which last year was unranked Virginia. Now, Notre Dame playing in Miami would be a huge boost to the bowl if Clemson continues its playoff run.

NC State: The Wolfpack are the only team in the conference that does not play Clemson and Notre Dame. NC State subtracted road games against Clemson and Louisville along with a home game against Boston College, and added Georgia Tech and Miami at home along with games at Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

ESPN/ACC Network: Notre Dame’s home games remain the property of NBC, but now ESPN/ACC Network has five opportunities to showcase the Irish when they play road games at Boston College, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest.

Losers

Rivalry games: For the first time since the rivalry was born in 1958, Florida State and Florida will not be playing. That’s 62 uninterrupted years for the rivals separated by 150 miles. But that’s nothing compared to what the states of South Carolina and Georgia lose. Clemson and South Carolina will not play for the first time in 111 years. Georgia Tech and Georgia - just 70 miles apart - first met in 1893 and have battled 114 times. Although the first game between Louisville and Kentucky was in 1912, the teams have played just 32 times.

Florida State: The Seminoles have the most difficult ACC schedule. With Notre Dame (on the road) and North Carolina added to the schedule, FSU is one of three teams that play the three ACC teams ranked in most of the preseason polls – Clemson, Notre Dame, North Carolina. FSU also loses a big payday with its game against West Virginia in Atlanta being canceled.

Kickoff classics: The ACC plan means three early season made-for-TV games are history. Some might be salvaged, but we know all three games in Atlanta - FSU-West Virginia, Virginia-Georgia, North Carolina Auburn – have been canceled. “We certainly understand the ACC is doing what they feel is in the best interest of the conference and the health of their teams ... and as our partners, we support them in that decision,” Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan said in a statement to AL.com.

UCF: The Knights can’t catch a break. Hoping to earn respect from the playoff committee; UCF now stands to lose its only two games against teams from Power Five conferences. UCF could have really changed the narrative this year by beating North Carolina in its opener at home and Georgia Tech on the road. The Georgia Tech game still could be played with Georgia no longer an option as the Yellow Jackets’ non-conference opponent.
