“Country cooking for city folk” is the phrase Bubba’s Cooks Country stands by, according to co-owner Joel Vinyard.

The traditional Texas country restaurant with a Frisco location on Preston Road was inspired by homemade recipes passed down through the generations to Vinyard. He said his mother crafted many of the recipes used by the restaurant in the 1980s.

“It’s the kind of food you would get at your own dining table maybe 30-40 years ago,” Vinyard said.

Popular offerings include a country breakfast, homemade biscuits and an assortment of fried chicken meals, he said.

Vinyard said his mother and father opened the first Bubba’s Cooks Country restaurant in Dallas in 1981. The goal was to open a fast-casual restaurant, which was a rarity at the time, he said.

Nearly 40 years later, Bubba’s Cooks Country opened its second restaurant in Frisco in February 2019. Like the first location, the Frisco restaurant is outfitted with a dining room and drive-thru, Vinyard said.

“We’d been looking for a while for some place good to stay, and we always thought Frisco would be a good choice,” he said.

While the menu has mostly remained the same over the last 30 years, Vinyard said the newly added chicken and waffles item at the Frisco restaurant has been a hit with customers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Vinyard said it has been “stressful and scary” at times to manage the two restaurants.

Bubba’s Cooks Country reopened its dining room as soon as restaurants were given the green light from the state to operate at 25% occupancy, Vineyard said. The restaurant’s dining room has remained open at limited occupancy ever since.

“It’s not necessarily a good business decision, but it’s a way for us to get our people back to work and to start working on getting out of this situation,” he said.

The restaurant is currently offering dine-in service with restrictions as well as a drive-thru and curbside pickup, Vinyard said.

“We’ve received so much gratitude,” he said. “We’ve remained open because people needed an outlet to get to go and get out of the house for a minute or get to have something different besides what they cook for themselves.”
