After several weeks of surveying parents, staff and school committees, Lamar County School District officials have come up with a plan to reopen the district’s schools in the fall in a traditional in-school format, with the option of a virtual online offering.
Approximately 77 percent of the parents surveyed wanted full traditional school, with children in classes, while about 22 percent preferred their children receive an online education.
“We need to get back to educating kids,” school district superintendent Tess Smith said. “In-person, face-to-face is the ideal option. That is when we as educators do our very best work.
“That is how you build relationships and form connections with students, especially our younger ones. Am I concerned? Of course I am. Our goal is to do the best that we can for our staff and students. We want them safe and healthy so that they can remain in our buildings and receive the best education possible.”
Online registration began on July 14, and parents were able to indicate how each student in their household would receive their education for the school year. The parents who chose the virtual option will complete and Academic Agreement form; parents also will complete a Consent and Release for Video/Audio Conferencing.
Changes to those educational choices can be made at the end of a nine-week period by contacting school administration, and registration should be completed by July 24.
The school calendar will remain the same, with the exception of an adjusted schedule on Wednesdays. On those days, each school will release two hours earlier than usual to allow professional development and training for staff and teachers.
School buses will still run, but safety precautions will be taken as much as possible.
“We will not be able to socially distance on the bus due to numbers and space,” Smith said. “We are requiring everyone on a bus to wear a mask.
“We will sanitize between routes and crack the windows to increase airflow. We are working to add hand-cleaning dispensers to each bus.”
Parents will be expected to screen their students for any symptoms of COVID-19 – including coughing, shortness of breath, fever and chills – before sending their students to traditional class. Staff members will be temperature-checked every morning upon arrival, but because of the large number of students and methods of arrival, students will not be temperature-checked. Staff will monitor students throughout the day, and any students displaying symptoms will be sent to the school nurse.
Parents are asked to avoid early drop-offs in the morning and to stay in their cars while their children walk to the building. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer will be available at several points throughout the schools.
Students are recommended to wear masks within the school, and will be required to wear masks on the bus. Visitors will be allowed but will remain in public areas unless approved by the district office.
Hot meals will be provided each day, except on the shortened Wednesdays, which may feature a “grab and go” format. Social distancing will be used in the classroom, and teachers will limit the use of shared supplied when possible. Internal classroom doors that open to hallways may be propped open.
Although athletic groups have been able to work out, practice and begin tryouts, officials do not yet have any further guidance regarding the plan for fall sports.
Students who participate in extracurricular activities must be traditional students and will be in the regular educational setting in the school buildings.
