CCPS Board Approves Traditional Reopening With Virtual Learning Option - wkdzradio.com

Christian County school board members Thursday night approved a traditional school reopening plan that will allow students to return to in-person instruction in the classroom or enroll in the Virtual Learning Academy.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel

Superintendent Chris Bentzel presented board members three reopening instructional models – traditional, hybrid, and NTI, along with the Virtual Learning Academy. He said the traditional reopening of school would require students returning to in-person instruction and would include a face mask requirement for students and staff and social distancing to mitigate COVID-19. However, he added a student not wearing a face mask was not going to be a discipline issue.

He also said a strength of the traditional model is the relationship connection between students and staff.

He added the school also provides many wrap-around services from the food programs and extra-curricular activities to health and mental services.

Bentzel then briefly explained the Virtual Learning Academy plan is a stand-alone option parents can choose to use at any time throughout the school year.

He added all students from 3rd-12th grade will be provided devices.

Director of Instruction Jessica Addison

Director of Instruction Jessica Addison said they are asking parents who want to enroll their child in the Virtual Learning Academy to make a 9-week commitment but could opt to return to regular in-person instruction which would occur quarterly. She said the deadline for parents to choose the Virtual Learning Academy is the last day of July.

She noted they have already received responses from parents of over 1,000 students interested in the online learning academy option.

Bentzel and the COVID-19 Task Force recommended the traditional model, which was approved by a 4-1 vote with board member Tom Bell voting no. Bell explained he was in favor of the hybrid model in which students would be in the classroom for two days, split with NTI three days a week. He pointed out he is concerned for the health and safety of students and staff members and would like a gradual reopening at this time.

The next board meeting/workshop will be Thursday evening, August 6, at 6:00.
