Bowling Goes Unbeaten in Traditional Round at MOTIV Ladyjack Classic - Youngstown State Athletics

The Youngstown State bowling team went 5-0 in head-to-head matches behind the best day on Lyndsay Ennis' young career on Saturday at the MOTIV Ladyjack Classic in Kenosha, Wis.

The Penguins topped two ranked teams in their unbeaten day, and they averaged 978.6 collectively in their five traditional matches. Youngstown State finished the two days of qualifying in sixth place, just 17 pins shy of making the top four and having a shot at the tournament title on Sunday.

"I'm very proud of the overall effort," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I know it stings a bit to miss the top four by less than 20 pins, but I thought we stayed together and made great shots all day. Sometimes the pins don't cooperate in the short term. We are being excellent in what we do and how we do it, and if we keep our focus on doing just that, we'll make a solid run tomorrow."

The Penguins began the day with a 999-948 win over 10th-ranked Stephen F. Austin behind a 269 game from junior Megan Grams. Ennis bowled a 179 against the Lumberjacks, but she averaged 216 over the final four games to finish with a five-game set of 1,043. She had a 220 in YSU's 976-902 win over Aurora, and the freshman bowled a career-high 232 game in a 1,004-797 victory over North Central as YSU posted its highest team score of the day.

Ennis was also the top scorer in YSU's final two matches with a 212 in YSU's 978-815 win over No. 24 Marian and a 200 in a 936-842 win over Carthage.

Ennis finished 17th in the field, and the Penguins had three other bowlers finish in the top 31. Grams finished the day with a five-game total of 1,001 to place 27th, and Emma Wrenn finished one spot behind her with a 996 set. Wrenn shot at least 190 in all five games. Emma Dockery finished 31st with a 969.

Youngstown State totaled 9,892 pins over the 10 matches in qualifying, which was seven pins behind Stephen F. Austin and 17 behind No. 3 Arkansas State. No. 2 McKendree posted an impressive total pinfall of 10,540 in qualifying to earn the top seed in Sunday's bracket.

YSU will battle SFA to start bracket play at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins can still finish as high as third with three victories in the best-of-seven Baker format.
