Fires force temporary restaurant closures
Fairfax’s decades-old 29 Diner (10536 Fairfax Boulevard) lost its kitchen last week because of a chemical fire. The community favorite diner opened in 1947. Under its current owners, it houses a community pantry that provides food for those in need. There’s a GoFundMe set up to raise $100,000 to rebuild the kitchen. [WTOP News]
Meanwhile, Friendship Height’s Dolci Gelati (5252 Wisconsin Avenue) announced its temporary closure also because of a fire. No other information was immediately available. [Instagram]
Also, Indian fine dining destination Punjab Grill (427 11th Street NW) announced a (not fire-related) temporary closure starting November 24 to reset and enhance the restaurant. In a Facebook post, the owners said that the pandemic made it clear that returning to the old normal was not an option. No re-opening date has been set yet. [PoPville.com]
Coming attractions
Takoma Park’s Still Point spa (6 Grant Avenue) is getting a healthy food truck. The Green Rooster will serve healthy light meals like smoothies and grain bowls, plus drinks like kombucha on tap and chlorophyll water. It’ll permanently park outside Still Point spa starting December 11. Hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. [Washington City Paper]
Clarendon will trade pizza for different pizza when Angolino Pizza (3125 Wilson Boulevard) opens in the tiny spot formerly occupied by late-night pizza hub Goody’s, which quietly closed this year. The new owners, who have swapped the green exterior paint job for cobalt blue, say it will open this week pending final inspections. [ARLnow.com]
Woodley Park is also getting a new pizza joint in the spot that was previously Woodley Cafe. Maddy’s Pizza (2619 Connecticut Avenue NW) has hung its sign and plans to open in December. [PoPville.com]

There are still tickets available to Metro Cooking Show’s two-day culinary outing at the convention center this weekend. All-stars like Martha Stewart, Carla Hall, and barbecue great Myron Mixon join for cooking demos, book signings, and more. Plus, there is plenty of food and local booze to go with the bites from local restaurants in the Grand Tasting Pavilion. Tickets for the December 4 and 5 event are available here. [EaterWire]
Winner, Winner
Gina Chersevani won the top prize while competing on the Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games, winning $20,000 and all the glory. Chervani is celebrating with a limited savory cocktail series on offer at Buffalo & Bergen. The series, which she calls “Rising Peacock,” will feature stunners like a martini laced with smooth olive oil and a brandy crusta made with crushed crickets, cardamom, brown sugar, and vanilla.
