Blount principal Jerome Woods confirmed to AL.com Monday morning that he is officially opening the school’s head football job for applicants.
Former Williamson coach Dedrick Sumpter led the Leopards on an interim basis in 2021, taking over in August after Lev Holly took an administrative job in Mobile County.
“We are officially opening the job,” Woods said. “I met with coach Sumpter this morning and told him we appreciated the great job he did coming in with such late notice and taking over the team. I told him we would love for him to re-apply, but we are going to open the job to the best available candidates. I’m not saying that is not coach Sumpter, but we will see who applies and go from there.”

Woods said the application process would remain open through the Super 7 in early December.
“Once that concludes, we hope to narrow the candidates and have a quick interview process,” he said. “We hope to have a coach in place before the new year.”
The Leopards went 3-7 this year, losing the first three games of the season and the last three games of the season. They missed the playoffs for just the second time since 2006.
“I think we have one of the top 6A programs in south Alabama and really in the state,” Woods said. “We compete at a high level year in and year out. That’s what we expect here. We’ve had multiple players sign college scholarships under coach Holly’s leadership. I think we can compete with any program in any division in the state. We have a large amount of talent, and we are looking for the right candidate to harness that and take the program where it needs to be.”
