Monsignor Farrell High School celebrates 60 years with a traditional ‘Homecoming Weekend’ - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Sixty years after Monsignor Farrell High School opened its doors to students in September 1961, alumni and Farrell families and friends, returned for a traditional homecoming weekend that included a student-created float led around the newly dedicated Coach Dennis Barrett Stadium — and a yellow convertible that carried Barrett’s family.

“We are grateful to all of our alumni for coming home,” said Lou Tobacco, president of Monsignor Farrell High School and a member of the graduating Class of 1990. “Exciting things are happening at Monsignor Farrell thanks in large part to their generosity and active engagement. And while we take some time to honor our storied past, we are forging into our very bright future,” he added.

50TH REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 1971

The festivities kicked off on a Thursday when the Class of 1971 gathered to celebrate their 50-year class reunion. More than 100 alums and their significant others — some who flew in from all over the country — enjoyed an evening of ‘70s music and joyful memories as they whiled the evening away in Nicotra’s Ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn.

On Friday, an historic moment for members of the Monsignor Farrell High School family was realized when the former Alumni Stadium Athletic Complex was renamed the Coach Dennis Barrett Stadium before a capacity crowd as the football Lions defeated Xavier High School 41 to 21.

The evening began with a pre-game reception of friends, family, and former players of Dennis Barrett.

Brian Hall from the Class of 1977, one of Barrett’s former players and a close friend, had “Coach Dennis Barrett Stadium” sandblasted into the base of the granite Lion statue that he donated when the stadium complex was originally built in 2005.

A sense of nostalgia and pride continued into halftime with the homecoming parade. Farrell students of both the art and music programs added to the evening as the school’s marching band lapped the track ahead of a float pulled on a flatbed truck carrying members of the Class of 1971.

Closing out the parade was another piece of Farrell’s football legacy as members of the undefeated 1971 championship football team were led by Farrell football legend John Quinn, Class of 1972.

COMMENTS FROM FARRELL ALUMS

Rev. Dennis Billy, Class of ‘71: “I was very proud of our class and had a very strong sense of the Farrell brotherhood across the generations. I was very impressed by the upgrades to the school, especially the remodeled science labs. We made the right decision when we decided to couple our reunion with the Homecoming weekend.”

Joe Ruggiero, Class of ‘71: “I thought the ball was very well choreographed. I particularly was impressed how well they blended the old and the new in celebrating the history of Farrell. Overall, an outstanding event.”

Sal Turchio, co-chair of Reunion Class of 71: “We all share a profound respect, appreciation, and love for Monsignor Farrell, which provided us with a great education inside and outside the classroom. This education was the springboard that resulted in our collective success throughout our collegiate and professional careers. The brothers, priests, lay teachers, and coaches instilled in us many of the values that still guide us today. Coach Dennis Barrett, who was only 10 or 11 years older than most of our classmates when he started his Farrell career in 1967, was a brother/father figure to many of us. His youthful enthusiasm and energy complemented his experience and wisdom that helped make us better people.”
