Dodge Will Keep Traditional Looks, Despite Futuristic Powertrains - Top Speed

Muscle Cars are well known for their engines and sound, but now, as more and more vehicles become all-electric, Muscle Cars as we know them are in danger. So how do you keep the special image of Muscle Cars alive in these changing times? According to Dodge, it could happen by design. Dodge Chief Design Officer, Ralph Gilles, told Fox News at the Detroit Auto Show more about his recent work. He explains, that he and his team are excited about the challenge of updating the Brand without scaring off its loyal fan base.

Dodge showed the Charger Datona SRT Concept at the Detroit Auto show featuring a bold new design, but one that stays true to traditional muscle car design. The styling is obviously inspired by the 1968 Charger, but with a modern touch. Gilles explains that "we're trying to bring a whole generation of Muscle Car lovers along with us on this exciting journey, but [...] they want the world to know, so it has to be different."

The most apparent of the special design features is the so-called R-Wing at the front of the concept. At first, you might believe that you're seeing a typical grille inspired by the 68' Charger. Looking closer, however, reveals that it is actually a bridge between the fenders. It is supposed to improve aerodynamics by allowing air to flow through. Another special feature is the hatchback instead of a traditional trunk. Gilles confirms that it "was the result of aero" but public demand would be changing to utility vehicles. This is what Dodge wants to take into account.

According to Gilles, "they're happy that it doesn't look like a jelly bean" and part of that is the front end looking menacing while still featuring a lot of character and celebrating the brand. In these terms, he closes with clear words: "If you want to buy jelly beans, go get it. It ain't going to come from us."

Finally, Gilles addresses the Charger Daytona SRT concept as a "public letter" to Dodge fans. He and his team will look forward to feedback since there is still some time to update the design before it is finalized for production. So far, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The design of the production version Charger should be finalized by the end of the year. The final version is expected to be unveiled over the course of next year and will go on sale in 2024.
