What are the Key Differences Between Trade Schools and Traditional Colleges? - mySA

The first trade school was established in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1879. Before this, students had learned trade skills while still in high school, but it wasn't an option to receive a trade school degree. From there, trade schools became an option that rivaled going to a traditional college.

Trade schools and traditional colleges have different aspects that they focus on. One isn't necessarily better than the other, but each type of schooling will open different doors for you.

What Is a Trade School?

A trade school is often referred to as a vocational or technical school. The purpose of a trade school is to give students the skills and education needed to land a specific occupation.

Trade schools can be public or private institutes, but many trade schools are for-profit. The length of trade school programs varies depending on the skills needed, but usually, it lasts between eight months and two years.

Unlike traditional colleges where you receive a bachelor's degree, you'll receive a diploma, apprenticeship, or certificate instead. Once you've completed your studies, you can immediately apply for a job in your chosen field.

Most trade school students have successful careers. For instance, the Bureau of Labor states that the median pay for an electrician is $60,040 per year. The range of pay you'll receive will depend on your skill level and the demand in your area.

You also aren't as limited as you might think when it comes to trade schools. Trade schools aren't limited to only electricians and plumbers. There is even a medical trade school that opened a campus on the Northwest Side where you can earn a trade school degree.

What Is a Traditional College?

Most people are familiar with the concept of a traditional college. It's the post-secondary schooling that is usually depicted in movies and series and is often seen as the logical next step after graduating high school.

Traditional college usually requires students to be in attendance full-time so that they can earn at least 12 credit hours per semester. “Traditional college: is the umbrella term we’re using for the purposes of this article to define the following types of educational institutions:

  • Community college

  • University colleges

  • State colleges

  • Graduate schools

Traditional college usually has strict application requirements ranging from tests and essays to in-person interviews. Traditional college usually lasts anywhere between two to four years, but many pursue higher degrees which can take more time to complete. The cost of college also depends on the institution you choose, the program you're in, and whether you receive any scholarships.

When it comes to trade schools vs. traditional colleges, there is no right or wrong answer. Deciding what field you want to pursue after high school will help you decide which option is better for you. Your options are limitless, and you're the only one that can decide which option is right for you.
