ANN ARBOR, MI -- A new Ann Arbor shop is set to bring traditional Yemeni coffee in the coming months.
Haraz Coffee House, which has a flagship location in Dearborn, is set to open in early 2023, according to owner Hamzah Nasser.
“To be in the heart of Ann Arbor is like a dream come true,” Nasser said.
Nasser launched the concept in 2019, opening his first location in April 2021. Since then, he has opened a location on Wayne State University’s campus and is slated to open 21 others across the country. Ann Arbor will be the third location.
In addition to serving coffee, Haraz Coffee House also offers classes and catering.
But the real secret to Nasser’s success has been the shop’s brewing method.
Haraz Coffee House serves coffee made in a traditional Yemeni style that heats milk, coffee grounds, cardamom and cinnamon together, rather than adding an espresso shot to steamed milk.
“It’s very rich. You can taste so many more flavors,” Nasser said. “You’ll taste the flavor of the cardamom – we balance it very well to where the cardamom is not outpowering the coffee and the coffee is not outpowering the cardamom too much. It’s just a very balanced beverage.”
Because the coffee is made from scratch, it takes between eight to 12 minutes for each drink.
“We don’t use a push of a button and your whole drink comes out like some other corporate coffees,” Nasser said.
Haraz Coffee House also serves a variety of traditional pastries, such as kanafeh cheesecake, saffron milk cake and rose milk cake, as well as lattes, chai and black coffee.
Nasser was inspired to bring the coffee shop to Ann Arbor after hearing from visitors from the Ann Arbor and Lansing areas at his Dearborn shop. He also plans to open a location near Michigan State University.
Haraz Coffee House, 333 S. Main St. in Ann Arbor, plans to be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
“It’s been so amazing, being a part of a new community,” Nasser said. “I see it as my family is getting bigger everywhere I go, so it’s amazing. I can’t wait to meet everyone and serve them.”
