‘Break Into Blossom:’ 83rd Annual Music & Blossom Festival will have traditional parade May 1 - Canon City Daily Record

COVID isn’t going to rain on this year’s Blossom Parade.

With the state’s new 3.0 Dial in effect, and with Fremont County sitting at Level Bue and potentially moving to Level Green in the near future, many limits on outdoor gathering restrictions have been lifted to allow for the 83rd Annual Music & Blossom Festival Parade to be held in a shortened, but traditional form May 1.

To celebrate Colorado’s Territorial Correctional Facility (Old Max) turning 150 this year, the festival’s theme is “Break Into Blossom.”

The parade will begin at 1 p.m.and will travel along Main Street from Third to 10th.

The route is shorter because marching bands will not be able to participate. They haven’t been able to practice or travel.

“We’re encouraging any and all people to get creative and maybe get family members or neighbors to put together some floats,” said Board Vice President Greg DiRito. “Any local musical acts can be put down the parade route in place of the bands.”

The local favorite Mystic 7 will be playing their music along the route and other bands are invited to join in.

Attendees are encouraged to do their best at social distancing and wearing a mask.

“We still have to act with some social responsibility, but it’s a big step in trying to get back to normal,” DiRito said.

The registration deadline is April 21.

The carnival won’t be here for Blossom Weekend, DiRito said, but they are working with the committee to potentially be here for July 4.

The carnival company needed to have more events lined up back to back to justify the expense of traveling, and they also weren’t sure about state and local regulations until just recently.

“It just isn’t feasible for them to be here for that,” DiRito said.

Blossoms in the Park will be May 1-2 at Veterans Park, featuring several vendors, but there will be no Cluster Duck because of the lateness of planning.

The Blossom Committee and its volunteers typically start planning late December or early January, so with only one month to go until the festival, they’re scrambling to pull off the event for the enjoyment of the community.

“It’s a lot of work but the volunteers are pretty awesome and they’re diving in and making this happen,” DiRito said.

The Royal Gorge Rodeo likely will happen later in 2021, but it will not coincide with the Blossom Festival this year. The planning committee is looking at dates later in the summer.
