Eastern Michigan University planning for ‘more traditional’ in-person fall semester - MLive.com

YPSILANTI, MI – Eastern Michigan University is planning for a “more traditional” semester this fall, officials announced Thursday.

In additional to a more traditional classroom experience, there will be more on-campus activity and experiences for student organizations, athletics and other aspects of university operations during the fall 2021 semester, according to a release from the university.

“We understand that for many students, particularly those in their first and second years, a more traditional in-person/on-campus experience provides the greatest opportunity for a successful start to achieving their degree,” said EMU President James Smith. “We are approaching our planning cautiously and carefully, with safety considerations a primary consideration.”

The university is engaging faculty and staff experts to adjust protocols accordingly, the release states. COVID-19 cases in Washtenaw County and across the state continue to rise, but cases at EMU continue to be low, with the university reporting just 15 cases between March 24-30.

The university began the winter 2021 semester online and transitioned a limited number of classes to in-person formats after two weeks.

EMU is working to prepare scenarios that provide reduced levels of in-person activities to ensure the university is prepared to adjust operations, according to the release.

“I thank our students, faculty and staff for their adjustments and hard work to get us through the semester. I remain deeply grateful for our faculty’s extraordinary efforts to adapt course delivery and our student’s compliance with the many practices necessary to keep one another safe and our case numbers low,” Smith said.

The university will again offer single dorm rooms at a reduced cost for students. The cost will only be $1,000 more than the cost of living in a double room, and in the past, single rooms have cost $2,500 more than doubles, according to the release.
