An on-line petition is making the rounds, calling for a more traditional graduation ceremony at the University of Georgia: UGA is planning for in-person, outdoor graduation with limited attendance held over three days in mid-May. A student-organized petition effort says the commencement should be opened to a more conventional approach now that Governor Kemp has relaxed most coronavirus restrictions in Georgia.
The Georgia Department of Public Health says more than 46,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccines have been administered in Athens, with almost 21,000 shots in arms in Oconee County.
Registration continues in Oconee County, sign-ups for a coronavirus vaccination event that will be held April 17 at the Civic Center in Watkinsville.
Jackson County Commissioners are withdrawing County support for a COVID vaccination site set up at the Jackson County Agricultural Center in Jefferson.
Georgia has lifted many pandemic-related restrictions. Governor Brian Kemp has eliminated social distancing requirements at businesses like restaurants and a ended ban on gatherings of 50 or more people.
The Georgia Department of Public Health says the state is administering coronavirus vaccinations at the rate of almost 45 thousand per day, for a total of nearly 4.5 million so far. Of those, 1.6 million have now been fully vaccinated against COVID 19.
