Murray: Jim Lyons stands for traditional conservative values - Boston Herald

Massachusetts GOP leaders have been grabbing headlines of late as members clash.

Tom Mountain, vice chair of the state’s Republican Party, never fails to scold conservatives to “get your vaccine.” He is the perfect water carrier for Gov. Charlie Baker’s narrative, as his messaging cloaks the underlying presumption that MAGA conservatives are too dumb or too stubborn to get the shot. Mountain will wax eloquent on unmasked revelers in Washington, but fails to mention Baker’s botched vaccine rollout, the economic devastation wrought on Massachusetts’ small business via Baker’s lockdown rules or his role in the tragic deaths at the Holyoke Soldier’s Home.

Then we have Jim Lyons, the conservative chairman of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee and the pariah of progressives. Lyons was elected after the Baker machine was soundly swept out from the majority on the state committee. The same America First voices that built a working-class Trump coalition wanted to build a new Republican Party in Massachusetts, and under Jim Lyons they are succeeding. That is why you will continue to see brickbats hurled at Lyons.

The anti-reform Bakerites just cannot have a Republican Party built on virtues and American supply chains. It comes as no surprise that 29 Republican lawmakers signed a letter slamming Lyons. They know where their bread is buttered. There are a lot of jobs and perks for state representatives, their families and their hangers-on that even a feckless Republican governor controls.

The latest outrage du jour features Catholic Republican State Committeewoman Deb Martell, who shared her views on the adoption of two children by a gay Republican candidate while recruiting for a conservative Republican to run against Congressman Jim McGovern. This was the last straw for the Baker Republicans, and another convenient stick with which to bash Lyons.

That candidate, Jeffrey Sosa-Paquette, is in favor of: abortion, amnesty for illegal aliens, trans girls competing in school athletics and the so-called Equality Act — Martell had every right to issue a conservative alarm.

As for me, I’m rooting for the Jim Lyon’s Trumpified gang in this fight. Lyons is on the right track. The middle class of America is on the verge of a polling booth revolt against both progressive Republicans like Baker and Sosa-Paquette, as well as progressive Democrats like Jim McGovern. They want girls playing with biological girls in high school and college athletics. They want respect for religious freedom and the right of historic Catholic and Baptist orphanages to serve mothers and fathers. They want their police departments fully funded, and criminals prosecuted not coddled. They are tired of teachers and school boards shoving ontological thinking and racist theories down their children’s throats.

Tom Mountain can keep yelling about vaccines. On the other hand, every time I see a new “outrage” headline about Massachusetts GOP Chairman Jim Lyons, I’m excited and hopeful. Lyons is vaccinating the Massachusetts body politik against hacks, abortionists, progressives, law enforcement haters, critical race theory promoters and illegal immigration. We just might have a healthy Republican Party in the Bay State someday soon.

Lou Murray is the chairman of the Ward 20 Republican Committee in Boston. He was a delegate and national Catholic adviser to Donald Trump in 2016.
