More than 2,700 seniors among Poway Unified’s five traditional high schools will be concluding their secondary educations on Friday in a year that was nothing like they expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This includes the 558 Nighthawks at Del Norte High, 528 Titans at Poway High and 577 Broncos at Rancho Bernardo High. PUSD’s Mt. Carmel and Westview high schools are also holding ceremonies.
For the vast majority of their last year of high school — plus the final few months of their junior year — the Class of 2021 was limited to online classes. Returning to their campuses was a phased process and some chose to finish their final year of high school virtually.
Unlike last year’s graduates who had drive-thru ceremonies, the Class of 2021 have the opportunity to walk into their campus stadiums with their classmates and walk across the stage to the cheers of family and friends sitting on the bleachers.
Seniors at Del Norte were given three options — participate in the traditional ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday in the school’s stadium with a livestream available for guests not able to attend, be part of the morning walk through ceremony if graduates and their guests prefer to not be among a large crowd, or opt out of all ceremonies and just pick up their diploma. For the Friday morning event, graduates get to walk across the stage as their name is read, turn their tassel and receive their diploma in front of a few guests.
Leading up to their graduation, the Nighthawks had a virtual Senior Awards Night on June 8. They could participate in the annual Senior Scooter Day on June 10, which meant they could bring scooters on campus. On Wednesday they gathered as a class for the Senior Picnic on a campus field. The Grad Nite party will be held late Friday evening at Party Pals in Sorrento Valley, with students returning to campus for pickup at 2 a.m. Saturday.
The graduation ceremony at Rancho Bernardo High will begin at 5 p.m. Friday. Due to limited viewing tickets for stadium seats, a livestream of the ceremony will be available for those unable to attend in person. Graduates and families not comfortable with attending the in-person ceremony can participate in private graduation times Friday morning so the seniors can walk across the stage and take photos.
The Broncos held their virtual Senior Awards Night on June 1, Athletic Recognition Night in the gym on Monday and a Senior Picnic on Wednesday at a field on campus. Their pre-graduation Grad Nite party is tonight (Thursday) at Party Pals in Sorrento Valley, with the seniors returning to campus shortly after midnight.
Poway High’s seniors will have the opportunity to walk across the stage at 5 p.m. Friday in the school’s stadium. The graduates will be able to have a traditional graduation, with four guests per household permitted to attend. For those uncomfortable with an in-person ceremony, graduates and their families will be allowed to come into the stadium at 9 a.m. Friday, said principal Richard Nash. During this time, graduates will have their names read, be able to take pictures and pick up their diplomas.
Poway High’s traditional Grad Nite, usually held on campus following the graduation ceremony, will be a little different this year due to health restrictions, according to school officials. The event will be held tonight (Thursday) at Boomers Vista. Themed “Down the Rabbit Hole (A Night in Wonderland),” seniors will spend from 5 to 11 p.m. participating in activities like mini golf, bumper boats, batting cages, go-carts and arcade games. There will also be more traditional Grad Nite activities available, including a DJ, photo booth, casino games, caricatures, crazy hair, temporary tattoos, prizes and food.
