The Hawaii High School Athletic Association unveiled long-awaited state tournament and sports start dates on its website late Thursday evening.
While no state tournaments have been held since the winter season of 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic, the dates revealed for the 2021-22 season are standard operating procedure.
HHSAA Executive Director Chris Chun told The Maui News via text Thursday evening that the dates are “still tentative pending site availability and Gov and (Department of Health) approval.”
Maui Interscholastic League president Jamie Yap, the principal at Maui High School and the voting member for the MIL in HHSAA executive board meetings, said that he expects MIL schedules to be released on Monday.
The MIL schedules release will follow a key meeting between Yap, MIL Executive Director Joe Balangitao and Maui County officials to nail down use of county venues.
“Everybody wants to hold the schedules until we get approval,” Yap said Friday. “It just makes more sense to wait for the meeting so we don’t have to change schedules after the fact. It looks pretty much status quo.”
Yap has said previously that the MIL schedules that have already been compiled match the state’s traditional timeline.
New MIL Athletic Director Council president Wade Hondo told Yap on Friday that schedules are nearly ready to release other than the venue issues.
“They have it all nailed down, the next step is to meet with the county to get the approval for the venues,” Yap said.
Quarterfinal play for Division I and II state football is set for Nov. 12-13, semifinal rounds for those divisions and the Open Division will be Nov. 19-20, and the state finals are set to be played Nov. 26-27. Sites for football are to be determined.
The official start date for football is July 19. Other fall sports officially begin Aug. 2.
While the MIL has already announced that there will be no non-league preseason games, MIL football games are expected to start in September, according to several sources.
Winter sports officially begin Nov. 1 and 8, and spring sports officially begin on Feb. 7.
The MIL will host state tournaments for girls golf (May 3-4), tennis (May 5-7), boys golf (May 5-6), Division II softball (May 11-14) and Division I baseball (May 11-14).
“Track is a little earlier than usual (May 6-7), but nothing earth-shattering, I think it still revolves around what we traditionally have,” Yap said of the overall state tournament and start dates schedules. “So, it’s just nice knowing that we are getting back on track.”
Yap was also encouraged by Gov. David Ige’s decree Thursday that travel and gathering restrictions will be loosened on July 8.
“I think the further along we go with the governor already, you see his behavior is changing, July 8th allowing different things to happen,” Yap said. “He has had the discussion about not reaching 70 percent (COVID-19 vaccination rate).
“If he says, ‘We’re open before reaching 70 percent,’ I think the next conversation with the county will be: ‘Will you allow fans in the stands?’ “
Yap added that the number of fans allowed in stands for football at War Memorial Stadium, a county facility; King Kekaulike and Sue Cooley stadiums, Department of Education on-campus stadiums; and Kanaiaupuni Stadium at Kamehameha Maui, a private school stadium, is the next large question to answer.
“I think it could be different (numbers) for both rounds (of MIL football play),” Yap said, adding that his school had to get a special exemption to hold graduation in War Memorial Stadium with 1,300 people in May. “So based on where we are right now, the only people allowing people to watch any games is all these outside (youth sports) leagues. It seems to be working for them. I don’t know how it’s going to work out for the MIL because the county is going to at some point have to say, ‘Yes.’
“It’s interesting to note that the club sports, nobody has talked about the fans. The fans have used good judgement about distancing and wearing masks, so I would hope that that will be the same for MIL athletics in the upcoming future. We’re almost to the point where we can be almost normal.”
