Starbucks, one of the nation’s leading coffee chains, is making a big change soon.
The company will phase out its iconic paper and plastic cups, replacing them with ceramic or reusable to-go mugs, according to CNN.
Starbucks uses white paper cups for warm drinks, clear plastic cups for cold drinks and holiday-themed cups depending on the season.
“Our cup is ubiquitous, and we love that,” Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer, told CNN. “But it is also this ubiquitous symbol of a throwaway society.”
The plan is to phase out the disposable cups entirely by 2025.
Starbucks believes this will decrease the amount of paper and plastic in landfills, according to the report.
The company currently is testing a borrow-a-cup program; customers place a $1 refundable deposit for a durable cup that they take with them and return after use.
“We developed a new cup that had a very low environmental footprint, was lightweight polypropylene, ultimately recyclable and could replace 100 single-use disposable cups,” Amelia Landers, vice president of product experience, told CNN.
Starbucks also began allowing customers to bring in reusable cups again last summer after halting the practice at the start of the pandemic.
There are over 250 Starbucks locations in New Jersey.
