City of Creswell plans new 4th of July traditions, cancels traditional celebration - KEZI TV

CRESWELL, Ore.-- Like most large events and gatherings this year, the annual Creswell Fourth of July Celebration was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This event brings in tens of thousands of people from across and out of the state.

The Creswell Chamber of Commerce said they have partnered with local businesses to allow the community to still celebrate the day--but in a safe manner.

However, the traditional celebrations will still be missed by many.

“It makes me feel sad,” Creswell resident Millie Pellerin said. “Just the whole thing and seeing people. Not just the parade itself but seeing the people who enjoyed it.”

The Chamber has planned decorating contests such as “Best Decorated Business” or “Most Patriotic Pet.” Kona Shaved Ice will be in neighborhoods, as well as local plane flyovers and other alternative festivities.

Jurgin Ramil is a Creswell resident and Vietnam veteran. He, along with many other community members, said they still plan to have a parade.

“We the people are going to carry on this tradition that’s been going on for years and years,” Ramil said. “Of course, we will abide by all the rules that the Oregon Health Authority dictates to us.”

Ramil said that it is important that the true meaning of Independence Day is kept the priority.

“It’s very important for the youth to know that we remember our forefathers,” Ramil said. “They weren't perfect, but some things are good."

Others community members shared that while it is disappointing that the traditional celebrations were canceled, it was the right call.

“This community is a small community,” Creswell resident Carolyn Hall said. “When you pack in hundreds of people together in a small space, it could be dangerous. I think it's good that they canceled the parade. It's sad, but safety needs to be first.”
