STURGIS, S.D. – An emotional tradition, the Buffalo Chip Flag Raising makes anyone who visits Freedom Field stop and think. Think about the thousands that have died in the name of freedom.
Owner, Founder of the Buffalo Chip, Rod Woodruff, began the tradition during Operation Iraqi Freedom almost 20 years ago.
The over 800 flags are meant to represent our American soldiers.
“When you put that flag in the ground, I love to salute it, thank them for their service and that’s what this is all about,” said Larry Zimmerman, Former-Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs. “The 800 flags represent 50, or 100, you’re putting up flags for thousands and thousands of people that have fallen.”
The flags will remain raised until the end of the 80th Sturgis Rally in August.
