New high school in Mansfield to focus on non-traditional students - Mansfield News Journal

MANSFIELD - Traditional high schools aren't for everyone.

With that in mind, a new high school in Mansfield bills itself as different. Cypress High School is scheduled to open Aug. 10 at 1160 W. Fourth St. in the former Jerry's Home Furnishings building.

"We know that every student learns differently. Our approach is to understand what each student needs to succeed and help them chart a path to graduation," director Danielle Kelley said on the school's website. "Our flexible school hours, individualized learning plans and lots of support from caring teachers allow each student to work at their own pace, earning credits towards graduation as quickly as they can or as slowly as they need to."

The charter school is under the umbrella of Akron-based Oakmont Education. Cypress High School is one of 13 such schools in Ohio and receives funding from a combination of sponsors and the Ohio Department of Education.

"We're not coming in here to steal another school's students," Kelley said. "When you're in education, you need to help everybody."

Cypress High School offers free tuition and a free lunch. The career tech program also is free.

"It doesn't cost a student anything but their time, their commitment and their desire to succeed," Kelley said.

It is open to students ages 15 to 21.

Kelley noted there will be smaller class sizes of 18 or fewer.

"That's going to be important with the coronavirus," she said.

Cypress High will offer the usual subjects such as math, English, science and history, as well as a career tech program in which students can be certified in construction, health care, informational technology and customer care.

In the construction field, the Oakmont Construction pathway combines industry credential training with hands-on, functional experience.

Modules include basic safety, introduction to construction math, introduction to hand tools, introduction to power tools, construction drawings, communication skills, employability skills, materials handling and the OSHA 10 certification.

In addition to earning nationally recognized industry credentials, construction students participate in hands-on experiential learning opportunities.

Oakmont’s Information Technology (IT) pathway prepares students for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification. Through industry-leading assessments and real-world exercises, the MOS guarantees every certified user has the ability to command the full features and functionality of Microsoft Office.

Through Oakmont’s Healthcare pathway, students complete medical training before working toward industry credentials that lead to careers in the health-care industry.

The first industry recognized credential, certified nursing aid, is awarded through the Ohio Department of Health and is required if students wish to sit for the state tested nursing assistant (STNA) exam. Additional industry credentials available for students include certified phlebotomy technician, certified EKG technician and certified patient care technician.

"Our goal is when they walk out our door, they're walking into a job," Kelley said of the career tech program.

Students also can get ready for college by attending Cypress High.

"We are all about the students. The school is designed for students," Kelley said. "We want to build that emotion and guide you along the way."

Kelley has been in education for more than 25 years and has a doctorate in educational management from Northcentral University in Arizona and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Kentucky University, as well as a master’s degree in education from the University of the Virgin Islands.

For more than 20 years, Kelley has worked in domestic and international institutions of learning with multicultural student bodies. Her tours of duty include residing in five continents.

"I'm passionate about education," Kelley said. "The opportunity to run a school like this is very dear to my heart."
