Jasper City BOE adds more traditional instruction days - Daily Mountain Eagle

The Jasper City Board of Education announced Friday morning that students opting to attend school for traditional, in-person instruction will start attending school four days a week.

Students have been coming to school two days each week on a split schedule since classes resumed last month, in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19; however, Jasper Superintendent of Education Ann Jackson said in a statement on Friday that system leaders feel comfortable letting students now have four days of traditional instruction.

Each Wednesday will remain a virtual day for students while deep cleaning is done at each school campus.

Jackson said, "The Jasper City Schools have experienced a great opening of the 2020-2021 school year in spite of COVID-19. Since we opened our doors on August 19, we have had relatively low numbers of COVID. We attribute that to our faculty and staff working to ensure the guidelines set forth by the Alabama Department of Public Health and Alabama Department of Education have been followed as much as possible.

"We also contribute our low numbers to our parents being committed to being our first line of defense, by not sending students to school sick. We believe it is now time to transition to a more traditional educational setting."

Friday, Sept. 25, will be the last day of the A/B split schedule, and all traditional students will return to school on Monday, Sept. 28, regardless of the split schedule they were originally assigned.

"The school week will resemble what we are currently doing with A/B students, but will combine the two," Jackson said.

She added, "Remote students wishing to return to the more traditional setting may do so, but will need to contact their principal before September 28.

"For students that are currently attending face-to-face but wish to transition to remote may do so at this time as well, and will need to contact their principal before September 28."

Jackson further encouraged parents to screen their children for COVID-19 symptoms before sending them to school. She also said parents should make the decision they feel is right for their children, regarding the schedule change.

"We are committed to supporting whatever platform works best for our families and what is more comfortable for them," Jackson said. "We recognize that during this time one-size does not fit all and want to support and assist as best we can as families determine what is best for them."

Jackson said this likely won't be the first schedule change needed during the school year, and system leaders will continue to monitor COVID-19 stats and follow the advice of health leaders.
