LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The city of La Crosse recommends people follow Wisconsin Department of Health Services and avoid going house-to-house for traditional trick-or-treating this year due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
“This year, with the COVID pandemic reaching its worse levels to date locally, we have received many questions from the community about ‘Trick or Treat’ or ‘Meet and Treat’ activities for Halloween,” said public information officer Capt. Jason Melby in a statement. “The City of La Crosse recommends that people follow the guidance provided by the Wisconsin Department of Health Service.”
DHS recommended against trick-or-treating in the traditional fashion this year, saying going house-to-house and having in-person contact is not recommended. It also recommended against in-person, indoor parties and celebrations.
“While we understand Halloween is an exciting event for many kids and adults alike, following the DHS recommendations is a reasonable response in light of the significant spike in cases locally,” said Melby.
DHS provided recommendations for safer Halloween activities at dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/community.htm. DHS suggested virtual costume contests, where people dress up and go online to rate each other’s costumes, as well as decorating your home.
For trick-or-treating, DHS recommends leaving individual grab bags or paper cups filled with goodies and watching through the window.
La Crosse Downtown Mainstreet Inc. has cancelled its trick-or-treating event, originally scheduled for Halloween.
