The CHSFL is planning to implement flag football for its league when authorized football practices begin Sept. 21 with an eye toward having a traditional season sometime after the new year, according to a source.

The flag football scenario, which, of course, will not include linemen, will provide participating schools an opportunity to prepare for the traditional tackle season over a six-week span this fall. Schools are not obligated to participate and must inform the league if they’ll opt in once the plan is officially announced.

The principals of the schools that participate in the CHSFL were forced to vote on what the league was going to do concerning the 2020 season after the NYSPHSAA recently announced football for the 2020-21 school year wouldn’t be played until the spring.

Governor Andrew Cuomo authorized football practice to begin on Sept. 21, but without competition and, most importantly, contact. The governor’s office has refused to reveal a ‘hard date’ for when the restrictions will be lifted, according to the source.

That forced the CHSFL to come up with an alternative plan in the interim and, apparently, it has decided to approve a fall flag football league for both the varsity and junior varsity levels. This will allow teams to prepare for the real season while also staging “traditional conditioning workouts and specialized training for (a) specific position.”

It is not known at this point if the Island’s four CHSFL teams -- Monsignor Farrell, Moore Catholic, St. Joseph by-the-Sea and St. Peter’s -- are planning to take part in this unprecedented development.

Although the NYSPHSAA has announced tackle football will commence on March 1, the CHSFL is not obligated to follow that start date. In fact, if Governor Cuomo lifts the competition and tackle ban earlier, the 23-team league may decide to start its season earlier.

However, that possibility is contingent on several things. In addition to the governor’s approval, the COVID-19 infection rate and weather will also be taken into consideration when a decision is made.

The 2020 campaign has been highly anticipated as far as the Island’s CHSFL teams are concerned since the Lions, Mavericks, Vikings and Eagles are all scheduled to play each other in the same season for the first time.

If the four schools opt in for flag, it’s possible they’ll meet during the 7-on-7 competition as well.
