Redwings go back to traditional offense - The Hudson Reporter

After a couple of years going to the spread formation, the Hoboken High School football team is taking a slice of the past in their offensive approach this season.

The Redwings are going back to the Delaware Wing-T formation, an offense that was put into use when the legendary Ed Stinson was conducting his reign of terror on northern New Jersey football and continued on through the tenures of the late Lou Taglieri and current head coach Keeon Walker.

It was the Wing-T that made Walker a star when he was a player at Hoboken in the early 1990s before heading off to play at Syracuse. Walker was an All-State running back out of the Wing-T.

So, it made sense for Walker to take a page of the past and reinstall the Wing-T with the Redwings (which still looks silly as one word).

“We are loaded at the skilled position,” said Walker, who begins his fourth season as the head coach at his alma mater. “We have a ton of guys who have played a lot of football over the years. The Wing-T is what they learned in Pop Warner. We have guys up front who are all Wing-T kids. All we’re doing is reintroducing it to them. I think it works to our advantage.”

The quarterback is senior James Blanks, Jr. (5-10, 175), the son of the former Hudson Reporter Male Athlete of the Year who has the same name.

The younger Blanks is a three-year starter who has proven that he can run, he can throw and more importantly, he can lead an offense.

“He’s a playmaker,” Walker said. “He’s like our fourth ball carrier in the backfield.”

The fullback is junior Jason Jeannot (5-9, 185), who was a receiver in the spread offense, but moves in to play fullback with this offense.

“Jeannot has experience, because he’s been with us since he was a freshman,” Walker said.

The halfback is someone with even more experience. Kyrin Rhone (6-2, 225) returns for his senior year. He’s a two-time Hudson Reporter All-Area honoree and a two-time 1,000-yard rusher for the Redwings. Rhone is the player to watch with the Redwings. They go as he goes.

“He’s bigger and stronger,” Walker said. “I think he’s ready to have a big year. We’re putting him the position to do well. He’s going to show people that he’s a dynamic player and separate himself from everyone else.”

Walker said that Rhone has the grades to advance to college and has a handful of offers, but nothing concrete.

“Hopefully, we can get him going and then the colleges will be drooling over these guys,” Walker said.

The other back returning is senior Anthony Henriquez (5-9, 215), the son of former Hudson Reporter All-Area honoree by the same name.

“Defenders just don’t want to tackle him,” Walker said of Henriquez, who is a terror once he gets a head of steam going. “He also catches the ball well.”

Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez (5-9, 175) is a two-year starter at wide receiver. Junior Sean Smith (6-2, 195) can play wide receiver or tight end. Avante Vargas (6-1, 215) is the returning starter at tight end and can do a lot of different things. It’s definitely a talented offensive bunch.

The offensive line features some talented returnees, including senior guard Steven Hampton (5-8, 240), who made Hudson Reporter All-Area last year.

The other guard is senior Ezire King (6-0, 250), who is a three-year starter.

The tackles are juniors Lennox Figueroa (6-0, 240) and Adrian Cepeda (5-11, 230). Senior Tyrese McClain (5-11, 260) returns to his starting slot at center.

The defensive ends are Vargas, where he played last year, and senior Angel Sanabria (6-2, 240). The defensive tackles are King, McClain, Hampton and Figueroa. They all will rotate in and out.

The linebackers are Rhone and Henriquez, who is another three-year starter at middle linebacker.

The cornerbacks are Gonzalez and junior Khalil Murray (5-9, 170), the younger brother of Damon Murray, who is attempting to make the Rutgers University roster as a walk-on.

The safeties are Blanks and Jeannot.

The Red Wings open the season at Cedar Grove Oct. 2. They return home for the version of “Friday Night Lights” to face October 9 in the soon-to-be officially named Louis Taglieri, Jr. Stadium against Snyder. – Jim Hague
