Wonder Woman 3 Will Have Traditional Theatrical Release Confirms WB - Screen Rant

The just-announced Wonder Woman 3 movie will have a traditional theatrical release, according to Warner Bros. It's been a big week for the Wonder Woman franchise. The long awaited Wonder Woman 1984 released on Christmas Day as part of a new hybrid strategy by WB. After encountering many delays due to COVID-19, the company decided to release the film simultaneously in open theaters and on HBO Max. Warner Bros. will continue this model with all of its 2021 movies, though the decision hasn't been without controversy. In Wonder Woman 1984's case, the release strategy seems to have paid off; the film scored the best opening weekend box office numbers since the pandemic began.

It's clear Warner Bros. is pleased with Wonder Woman 1984's performance. Only two days after the sequel's release, the company announced Wonder Woman 3 is on the way, with director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot both returning. At this point, little is known about the final movie in the trilogy. However, Jenkins recently teased Kristen Wiig's Barbara Minerva/Cheetah could return. She also spoke over the summer about temporarily pausing work on the film's story to see the impacts of the coronavirus. Additionally, earlier this month, Jenkins discussed her desire for Wonder Woman 3 to release using the theatrical model, saying it could affect her decision to return.

Warner Bros. seems to have taken Jenkins' comments to heart. Per Variety, the company confirmed Wonder Woman 3 will have a traditional theatrical release. Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich even called Wonder Woman a "theatrical trilogy" despite Wonder Woman 1984's hybrid release.

Considering Jenkins' recent comments indicating she may not sign on to Wonder Woman 3 without a theatrical release, Warner Bros.' decision makes sense. Additionally, the company is currently facing backlash from many due to its 2021 release strategy, so this announcement could help restore some good will in the entertainment industry. Perhaps most importantly, though, Wonder Woman 3 is likely years away from release. Jenkins will helm her recently announced Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie before filming Wonder Woman 3. By that time, hopefully the pandemic will be a thing of the past, making traditional theatrical releases the norm again.

Warner Bros.' early commitment to a theatrical release for Wonder Woman 3 is a good sign for the struggling theater industry. It shows the company still sees value in releasing films that way, despite its 2021 model. Though Wonder Woman 3's release is a long way away, WB's decision could motivate other studios to make similar announcements, which would be good news for both theaters and proponents of the big screen experience.
