CMCSS extends remote learning, traditional students return Jan. 25 - Clarksville Now

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System announced Monday that the district will extend remote learning for all CMCSS students through Friday, Jan. 22.

The announcement comes after the school system announced a planned district-wide remote learning day on Jan. 4 in response to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and the rate of community spread in Clarksville-Montgomery County.

CMCSS said their goal is to bring all traditional students back for in-person learning on Monday, Jan. 25, according to the message that was sent out to all employees and CMCSS families Monday afternoon.

Lower grade levels spread the virus less

“On average, there have been around 300 more students per grade level impacted by COVID-19 cases in the district’s upper grades than lower grades,” read the announcement.

“However, the district has a contingency plan for a prioritized return for pre-k through sixth-grade traditional students it will be prepared to share later if the conditions do not improve for a full return,” the announcement continued.

The district said it would prioritize the returns of the lower grades since the transmission rates of the younger students is lower, in addition to alleviating the burden of coordinating childcare for families with those younger students.

This plan is barring the COVID-19 numbers in the county at the time of students’ return to school, and the school system will diligently monitor case numbers and the community spread rates.

Teachers and staff must still report

Teachers and classified school staff will still have to report to their buildings and classrooms, according to the note.

“At this time, all employees who are not on leave will be expected to report to their work location at their regularly scheduled time. The only exceptions will be some employee groups who will have alternative assignments communicated to them by their supervisors. This is subject to change based on the conditions of the pandemic,” the announcement said.

No-cost meals will still be available through the end of the academic year in May, the announcement added. “Weekday meals are available Mondays from 1-2 p.m., and weekend meals are available Fridays from 1-2 p.m. at all CMCSS elementary schools,” read the message.
