Daily News readers were asked to share how they plan to celebrate Christmas this year if it will be different. They were also asked about what they serve as their meal and whether it is traditional or not.
Eve Witzel, Stanton — “We never do traditional — this year, I think homemade aebleskivers with all of the toppings and sides.”
Pamela Leys Cooke, Greenville — “Make your own family traditions, I say.”
Ashley Goetterman, Greenville — “My grandparents (who were my legal guardians) started the tradition in getting a honey baked ham (like from The Honey Baked Ham Company) and/or turkey every Thanksgiving or Christmas. I do the same thing now as an adult.”
Leona Mast, Belding — “Because we will not be having our children and grandchildren here this Christmas, and because my husband just had his total hip replacement completed, I am not putting up a tree this year, nor are we putting up our outside lights. We are in our 70s and usually decorate a lot, but just not possible this year. I am putting small decorations that I can bring up from the basement by myself, but that is all.”
Dawn Burgess, Greenville — “We have a family tradition for Christmas Eve. We have pastetli, a dish my Swiss stepmom introduced us to years ago. We have dinner and dessert and open stockings and presents together.”
Jean Chaplin Heaton Englund, Belding — “We used to have turkey and ham for Thanksgiving and we went to crab legs and lasagna for Christmas. This year, our whole family did not get together for Thanksgiving. We have grown so much. Christmas dinner, as of yet, is undecided.”
Melissa DeCovich Neely, Greenville — “We have a traditional English dinner every Christmas. That means a standing rib roast with Yorkshire pudding and gravy, mashed or roasted potatoes, mashed rutabaga, peas and maybe squash. Apple pie with custard sauce for dessert. It’s my gift to my small family.”
Robin Forletta, Ionia — “We do lasagna, Italian sausage, green bean casserole, garlic bread and salad. It’s a favorite here.”
Tiffany Simpson, Belding — “We are opening gifts with family via Zoom. My sister just had twins, my parents are compromised and we share my son with his dad and bonus mom, so our pod (dad’s house and our house) has really limited our exposure to others. We are probably not doing a traditional dinner but there will be food and hot cocoa.”
Melissa Balinski, Greenville — “Typically, we do a turkey for Thanksgiving and ham for Christmas Day. This year, though, I got a 21-pound turkey for six bucks after Thanksgiving, so turkey for Christmas it is.”
Norma Thurlow, Ionia — “I usually set a buffet for a 5-hour open house for family and friends. Appetizers, meatballs, ham, salads, spreads, dips, assorted desserts, etc. However, this year it will be just our household as we will be practicing social distancing. My husband and I will have something easy so I don;t have to work hard.”
Amber Kubec, Greenville — “We got to my parents’ house every year for Christmas dinner. (Wouldn’t change it for the world!) We have a prime rib dinner with all of our favorite sides.”
Archie Messenger, Belding — “I put up the tree and all not sure who’s going to be here for Christmas. I normally do a fancy breakfast for all and a meat, cheese, crackers and desserts for lunch/dinner. Plan is still the same but not sure how many will come. I am older and my grandkids all refuse to expose me to what they might catch in their jobs. We will see as it gets closer.”
Becky Shinabarger Herd, Greenville — “Mu husband is not a turkey eater, probably will have ham. With COVID going on, it will just be the two of us, plus our cat, Sparky! She will get a special treat. May everyone’s Christmas by merry and safe!”
Brenda Ruedger Golden, Ionia — “For years we have had lasagna on Christmas Eve. I’ve tried to change it up but the kids always request it. Not sure what we’re doing this year.”
Ruth Wisner, Greenville — “My kids love Mexican food so we usually get together to make a huge batch of tamales. This year, probably not.”
Sara Bristol, Lakeview — “No one in my family wants turkey again so soon…So I do lasagna, garlic bread and a huge salad or sometimes, ham and scalloped potatoes.”
Melanie Rodenhouse, Greenville — “We aren’t doing anything differently this year, our traditions will be the same. We have brisket on Christmas Eve with our girls and usually invite another family (this year will just be boyfriends), on Christmas Day, we visit my in-laws in the late morning for brunch (breakfast casseroles, sweet rolls and mimosas) and then an early dinner at my parents’ (usually lasagna).
Megan Beauchamp, Belding — “We do prime rib.”
Lisa Tater, Greenville — “Christmas coming June 2021 for our family. That way, we can ALL be together outdoors in the fresh air enjoying a BBQ and the gift wrapping will make a great starter for the bonfire. In the meantime, just my husband and I this year. Probably grill up a steak.”
Jamie Sherman, Greenville — “We cook something homemade usually, but something less busy like my mom’s homemade spaghetti.”
Brenda Henrichsen, Belding — “I’ve done ham, prime rib, leg of lamb and lasagna for Christmas dinner. Every one was a big, but I gotta say, the leg of lamb was stellar.”
Stephanie Chaprnka, Greenville — “We celebrate Christmas Eve with my husband’s traditions (Czechoslovakia) of a meager meal of bean soup, fish, bread and plum brandy. They were farmers and threw walnuts into the corners of the room for good harvest, it was a tradition from the homeland and after went to church services. We still carry on this tradition with our grandchildren now.”
Cindy Chickering-Youmans, Orleans — “We will have our core family…no extras. I fix a full breakfast, no one goes away hungry.”
Kathleen Steffens, Greenville — “Switched it up! Fettuccine Michael for the win! (chicken, alfredo, fresh mushrooms and pine nuts)
Drabra Dickens Miller, Belding — “My boys are all grown up. They get here around 10 to 11 in the morning, I still have my homemade cinnamon rolls waiting for them plus Christmas cookies, but I will have frosting and sprinkles waiting for them so they can decorate their own cookies. After, gifts are open and they get their fill with goodies, they leave to another place, so two hours and I am done with Christmas. I haven’t fixed a Christmas dinner in over 15 years. When they were younger, I used to do ham on Christmas Eve so they can be with their dad in the afternoon. It has been almost 30 years of no Christmas dinner.”
Gina Bean, Greenville — “My family decided to change the meal this year so we are having crab rangoon and chicken and whatever the kids bring to pass.”
Sandy Schnick-Harrington, Lakeview — “We always had ham and maybe chicken, sweet and mashed potatoes, lots of gravy, rolls and two or three salads — maybe coleslaw and lettuce, plus lots of pies; banana cream, coconut cream, pecan, apple and cherry. Coffee, milk, juice.”
