The 50+ events of traditional ‘Patriots Week’ were canceled for 2020, but check out these virtual ones - NJ.com

It was 244 years ago that General George Washington declared to General John Sullivan, “I am resolved to take Trenton.”

After having crossed the Delaware River on Christmas, Washington and his men surprised and defeated Hessian soldiers garrisoned at Trenton in a pivotal battle during the American Revolutionary War.

In modern times, that battle and other associated events are celebrated in a week-long series of events known as Patriots Week. Beginning with a reenactment of the crossing on Christmas Day, the celebration features an impressive array of 50-plus events for residents and tourists, so they can experience events that shaped our nation and learn more about those historic times.

But in this year of COVID-19, mass gatherings are not possible, so there will be no Battles of Trenton, no Colonial Ball, and for some worst of all, there will be no Pub Crawl.

Unlike in previous years, musket shots will not ring out in Mill Hill Park and American and British troops will not fight on Front Street. Unfortunately, all that will have to wait until next year.

Meanwhile, for this year of lockdown, there are still some virtual events lined up.

The Christmas Crossing can be experienced on any day in the warmth and comfort of one’s home in a specially produced video (on the “Friends of Washington Crossing Park” YouTube channel) where almost all of the reenactors are cleverly masked up while still preserving the integrity of the period costumes. Additionally, there are always a number of historical programs and playlists on the Old Barracks Facebook page.

The Old Barracks Museum closed in March due to COVID-19, but reopened for a time last summer. The building is currently closed until late winter/early spring.

Patriots Week typically draws thousands upon thousands of visitors, but as Old Barracks Museum Chief of Historical Interpretation, Asher Lurie points out, “no one wants to be a super spreader, especially a historic site that just trying to get by and do as well as it can.”

“So for our selves, for our city, for our visitors, for our staff, we’ve adapted,” Lurie added.

The Patriots Week website lists the other virtual Patriots Week events culminating in a December 31st Virtual Candlelight Peace Vigil to welcome 2021. For that event, participants are asked to connect via Zoom “and bring your own candle!”
