“Continue to pray for good weather,” was the request from Dr. Timothy S. Bowers, superintendent at the Williamsport Area School District, as he told the school board that as of now graduation at the high school will mark a return to what it looked like pre-pandemic.
“The high school is gearing up for an in-person graduation,” Bowers said.
“We’re able to share with the community that we’re going to go back to that traditional graduation in the stadium where we welcome folks to come and celebrate,” he added.
If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the ceremony will move inside and be a ticketed event.
Graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 10.
Looking ahead to next year, the board approved several agreements to provide for specialized services for district students at their recent meeting.
An IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) agreement with BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 for the upcoming school year was approved at a cost of $874,508.. The provisions of the contract stipulate that the IU will release funding to the district to support the provision of programs and services to students with disabilities.
A BLaST special education agreement, which covers the responsibilities of the IU 17 and the district in regard to the provision of special education service to school-age children. The amount of the contract is $585,326 and will be paid in five installments of $117,065 through the IDEA and ACCESS programs.
A 2021 Extended School Year (ESY) tuition agreement with New Story School to provide three students with special education requirements all related services at the rate of two students at $270 per day and one student at $500 per day. Costs will be paid through IDEA funds.
Another contract between the district and IU 17 will provide education services at LASA Quik residential program located in the district, The cost of these services are paid by the student’s home district and are billed through Child Accounting and the Business Office.
Under personnel, the board accepted the resignations of Olivia K. Erb, part-time aide; Quin R. Webb, full-time custodian floater; and Teresa M. Willets, part-time food service worker.
The board approved hiring the following personnel at the rate of pay listed:
• Nikki L. D. Baney, temporary professional employee to teach Kindergarten at Hepburn Lycoming Primary, $55,645.
• Elena M. Benavidez, temporary professional employee to teach third grade at Cochran Primary, $52,582.
• Chelsi R. R. Hendricks, professional employee, to teach kindergarten at Jackson Primary, $55,645.
• Vincent M. Krum, temporary professional employee, first grade teacher at Cochran Primary, $52,582.
• Matthew C. Oldt II, groundskeeper/custodian, $37,620.
• Joseph R. Eaton, Jeremy S. Steppe and Jennifer S,. Rodgers, summer school physical educational/health teachers, $31.20 per hour.
• Megan E. Louder, temporary professional employee to teach choral, performance and classroom music at the high school, $52,582.
• Clark D. Sarge, summer school mathematics teacher, $31.20 per hour.
• Academic recovery 5th marking period teachers: Brittany T. Naculich, Jacob T. Anderson and Diane E. Welch, mathematics; Ashley V. Muchler and Brandon M. Lusk, English; George H. Plowman Jr., special education and English; Geoffrey S. Waltz, social studies; and Marcia L. McCann and Makenzie C. Ryan, special education, all at $31.20 per hour.
• COVID Mitigation/Recoupment for special education elementary students teachers, Marchia L. McCann and Casey M. Murtagh, special education, both at $31.20 per hour.
• Melissa S. Martin, substitute administrative support/aide, $9.00 per hour.
• Wanda M. Erb, board secretary/business administrator for a four-year term beginning July 1, 2021.
• Brett L. Kleinbach, treasurer for a one-year term.
They also approved the following substitute teachers at a rate of $120 for the first 45 days and $130 per day beyond that: Vincent M. Crum, Mackenzie C. Ryan, Karrie A. Snyder, Megan E. Snyder and Skylar J. Young.
Adam L. Paulhamus was moved from full-time fifth grade teacher at Curtin Intermediate to full-time principal at the school effective Aug. 6, 2021 at a salary of $70,600. Erin F. Brouse was moved from full-time Title I reading specialist and elementary instructional coach at Cochran Primary to full-time assistant principal at Jack Primary at a salary of $87,446.
Tristin R. Forney was moved from Dean of Students at Cochran and Jackson Primary schools to Dean of Students at Lycoming Valley Intermediate School for the upcoming school year at his current per diem rate.
The board approved a request from Friendship House to use three classrooms, the gymnasium and gym equipment at Stevens Primary School. Friendship House requested relief from the occupancy fee estimated at $16,500 as all students are district students.
A license agreement with Forecast5 Analytics for 5Maps software including implementation services, project management and training at a cost of $12,302. Following the implementation the School Search Module has an annual cost of $5,000.
The board approved a consulting agreement with Automated Logic, Pittsburgh to perform scheduled maintenance visits, district-wide during the three-year contract. Cost will be, $60,537, $62,656 and $64,775 budgeted through the plant operations budget.
The trade-in of four vehicles and the lease of four new 2022 vehicles under the Mast Lease Agreement with Enterprise Fleet Management was approved. The trade allows the district to have newer vehicles and reduce the annual lease by around $3,000. The board also approved leasing three 2022 vehicles from Enterprise for the Student Services Department at an annual cost of approximately $18,000 per year.
The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. June 1 at the District Service Center, 2780 West Fourth St.
