The Montgomery Independent School District plans a more traditional graduation experience for seniors next week with some changes from last year’s pandemic experience.
The Lake Creek High School ceremony is Monday and the Montgomery High School ceremony is Tuesday. Both graduation events will start at 7 p.m. at the football stadium located off Texas 105.
“We are pleased to be able to celebrate the graduation of our high school seniors with a traditional ceremony this year,” MISD Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Duane McFadden said. “Our intent is to provide a formal ceremony that honors our graduates for their many incredible accomplishments as students in Montgomery ISD.”
“We are excited to celebrate this major milestone for them as they enter the next stage of their lives,” he continued. “We hope our seniors and their families will be proud of their graduation ceremony and remember it as an outstanding celebration that culminated their time as students in Montgomery ISD.”
Last year, both high schools held an in-person ceremony at the stadium with some restrictions, including a requirement for students to exit to the parking lot immediately after receiving the diploma.

Montgomery ISD’s Director of Communications Justin Marino has confirmed that students and parents will not be required to leave after receiving the diploma this year.
The senior class will get to stay together until all students have walked across the stage and the ceremony is formally concluded, he said. Masks will be recommended, and the band will perform live.
Marino said it was important for the district to support the attendance of all family members without restriction, which was a factor in the decision to host the ceremonies in the stadium instead of an indoor venue with limited seating.
“Throughout this school year, our seniors shared that a priority for them was for the district to ensure they were not limited in the number of guests they could invite to the ceremony,” Marino stated. “This is a primary reason the district chose to hold outdoor ceremonies at the football stadium.”
A virtual option will be available for those who wish to watch the graduates in either ceremony on livestream. However, there is no limitation on the number of people who can attend the ceremonies in-person.
“We feel we have adequate space to accommodate the anticipated number of guests,” Marino stated. “We will have one designated section that will require masks to be worn for families or guests that have health-related concerns or feel more comfortable in a fully masked environment.”
In 2020, the district saw 410 Montgomery High School graduates, including a third-generation valedictorian, receive diplomas unrattled by the novel coronavirus pandemic that unexpected shuttered classrooms and businesses across the state. The Montgomery High class of 2021 has 363 graduates.
“Although this year presented many challenges, our students exceeded previous years of academic, fine arts, and athletic achievements along with college signings, Montgomery HS Principal Andria Schur said. “All students, without a doubt, stood strong through the adversity and pushed through this pandemic with grace and excellence. We are so proud of their perseverance throughout this challenging school year.”
Last year, Lake Creek High School presented diplomas to its first-ever graduating class of 221 seniors who not only overcame the unprecedented shift to online learning but celebrated high school principal Phil Eaton’s victory over a 50-day hospitalization with COVID-19.
“We are looking forward to the second graduation ceremony in the history of Lake Creek High School with the same enthusiasm we had for last year’s inaugural graduation,” Eaton stated. “The 322 students in the Class of 2021 have faced what no other group has encountered in modern public education history and their leadership is the key to the incredible success we have experienced.”
“The lessons they have learned extend well beyond the classroom,” he continued. “Graduation is always the final and most significant celebration in any school year, but without a doubt this year’s ceremony will be one for the ages.”
