Onekama striving to make homecoming week 'as traditional as possible' - Manistee News Advocate

ONEKAMA —It is homecoming week for Onekama Consolidated Schools and the district is striving to make things "as traditional as possible."

Last year, Onekama Consolidated Schools' homecoming week was pushed back to March in the hope that coronavirus restrictions would loosen, allowing for a spirit week chock full of all the activities the school has enjoyed for decades.

When March rolled around safety protocols still precluded activities such as a dance and pep assembly from taking place. The school made the most of it with dress-up days, decorating posters and a stromboli party at the end of the week. This year, however, the dance, pep assembly and parade are making a return to Onekama's homecoming week festivities.

"We are very excited and we're trying to make it as traditional as possible," said Gina Hagen, Onekama principal/superintendent.

The homecoming dance will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

"We're just requiring our kids to wear a mask at the dance, but other than that, we're doing everything that we can to make it as traditional as possible," Hagen said.

The theme for spirit week is decades. The seniors selected the '80s, the juniors chose the '50s, the sophomore class picked the '60s and the freshmen opted for the '90s.

All students K-12 can participate in dress-up days throughout the week. Students dressed as the Onekama teacher of their choosing on Monday while today is Tourist Day. Wednesday is College Day, students will dress to match their decade on Thursday and Friday is Blue and Gold Day.

Hagen said the K-8 students will be participating in more than just the dress-up days, making this year's spirit week a treat for the entire school.

"Earlier this year our seniors painted parking spots for themselves in our parking area, so we're getting the sidewalk chalk out on Friday. ... We do a Friday activity every week for kindergarten through 12th grade and our activity for this Friday is to allow each class to decorate some spots with sidewalk chalk up in the parking lot for homecoming," she said. "We're just trying to get everyone involved. After the decoration of the parking spots we'll have a pep assembly for kindergarten through 12th grade also, where all kids will get involved. It's not just a high school pep assembly, but we'll get everybody involved."

Onekama's homecoming parade will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday.

"It will start at the park and go down Main Street and end at the school," Hagen said. "The floats will be up there for display."

Hagen said one way the school had to break from tradition was by having to hold its homecoming football game Saturday afternoon instead of on Friday night.

"We ran into a little snafu. Our football team has had many injuries, so we didn't play for a few weeks," she said. "Now we're back healthy and we have some more players, so we're ready to play, but then there was a referee situation. Traditionally we would have our game on a Friday night, but we weren't able to get referees, so we had to move our game to Saturday."

The Portagers will take on Fife Lake Forest Area on Saturday at 1 p.m., with a tailgate party slated for noon.

"We'll serve hot dogs, chips and water to the public and whoever wants to show up," Hagen said. "The floats will be on display. The football game's at 1 p.m. and we will crown the king and queen at halftime of the football game on Saturday."

Onekama High School's queen candidates include Mairin McCarthy, Macy Wallace and Sophie Wisniski. The king candidates are Dominick Moody, Alec Tabaczka and Ethan Walker.

The junior class representatives are Abigail Pruyne and Adam Domres, the sophomore reps are Ashlyn Blackmore and Reece Tiel and the freshman class will be represented by Jayla Fink and Travis Lapp.

After last year's restricted homecoming week, Hagen said she is glad students are able to enjoy one with all the events students know and love.

"We're back to normal as best we can be," she said.
