Traditional homecoming court won’t be part of Dexter High’s festivities this year - MLive.com

DEXTER, MI - A number of the traditional homecoming elements are in place at Dexter High School as students celebrate spirit week this week.

The traditional Homecoming parade is still planned for Friday, Oct. 8, while students will participate in an outdoor dance on Saturday, Oct. 9, inside Al Ritt Stadium.

One difference this fall, however, is the absence of a homecoming court, Dexter Community Schools Superintendent Chris Timmis said. Students plan to restructure the criteria for the court this winter, he said.

“A couple years ago students had talked that they wanted to change away from a traditional homecoming court to a different form of a homecoming court,” Timmis said. “The kids still haven’t worked out the exact plans of what they plan to do, but instead of just voting in kind of a popularity contest, they’re going to do it based on character traits.”

Student leadership continues to rework its plans for the new court, but without the changes in place in time for Friday night’s football game, Timmis said the court will be selected ahead of Dexter’s Coming Home dance later this winter.

Moving forward, Timmis said the new homecoming court will be in place for future fall festivities.

“They started working on it (last year) and then we had COVID and the pandemic,” Timmis said. “We’ve had some leadership changes and retirements and we’re just trying to get back in school.”

Changes to the traditional homecoming court have been a topic of discussion for members of the Southeastern Conference for years, Timmis said.

Rather than crowning a queen, Chelsea High School students opted to begin recognizing one of their peers with an excellence award at its homecoming football game in 2018.

While the homecoming crown was reserved for girls, and boys competed for the Winter Carnival crown, Chelsea’s excellence award is open to students of all genders, with the award criteria now based on the school’s “graduate learner profile.”

“It’s really been a student-driven concept, but it’s actually been a large part of a larger movement happening throughout the state and country,” Timmis said.

Dexter High School’s homecoming parade is set for 1:30 p.m. The parade will leave from the high school and make its way through downtown Dexter. The homecoming football is 7 p.m. Friday against Monroe High School.
