LANCASTER — The majority of students in Antelope Valley Union High School District’s Class of 2020 — and their parents — want a traditional graduation ceremony to take place when permissible, according to results of an initial survey conducted by the District.
The survey, sent April 9 to students and families, sought to gain feedback on what events were most important to them and to find creative ways to host them given the current Safer at Home orders amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The District received 5,593 responses to the survey including 1,866 from parents and 2,619 from seniors. Respondents overwhelmingly ranked graduation as the most important event.
The most recent survey (https://tinyurl.com/y84yeyjh) sent out Thursday and open through Monday provided five options for celebrating graduation. As of Friday, the District received 3,044 responses. The options are:
• A traditional graduation ceremony that would take place as soon as permissible, but no later than December.
• A reduced-size graduation where the district would host multiple graduation ceremonies to comply with physical distancing requirements when permissible.
• A virtual graduation that would be broadcast on the originally scheduled date of graduation.
• A virtual graduation broadcast on the original graduation date, with a physical graduation ceremony to follow when permissible.
• A drive-in style graduation where families would celebrate graduation collectively, but from their vehicle.
Students and parents are asked to rank the five options from one to five with one being the most desired celebration.
Cherice Bunting said her son Jeremiah Johnson, a member of Knight High School’s Class of 2020, prefers to have a regular graduation ceremony. Bunting cautioned her son that if they wait until December for a traditional graduation ceremony it might not happen.
“They’re young. They don’t understand how life works,” Bunting said. “People fall off, or people move or go to college. It won’t have the same feel and the same value, perhaps.”
Bunting hopes more parents and students take the survey. She expressed concern that the survey does not include enough details about the options.
“When I talked to parents (Friday) night, everybody was like, ‘Oh, I just did that survey but I didn’t know what a drive-in meant so I didn’t choose that one,’ ” Bunting said. “It’s on there but it’s really no explanation or a timeframe.”
Knight High School student Damien Jeffries proposed the drive-in movie-style graduation at the April 23 governing Board meeting. His suggestion was to use the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds parking lot.
“We’ve been coordinating on this idea,” Bunting said, adding her son and Jeffries are friends.
As Bunting explained in an email, the proposed drive-in graduation would have all schools in the District conduct their individual graduations on the night originally scheduled. Student families would drive to fairgrounds, remain in their cars and tune their radio frequencies to the same channels. Families could watch all graduation speakers on big screens, similar to a drive-in movie theater. Each student would have their name and picture announced on the big screen, parent families could honk and celebrate their graduates from their cars.
District administrators, school site principals, school advisers and senior class and Associated Student Body presidents, as well as student trustee Elijah Johnson, have gathered on Google Hangouts to discuss graduation and other ways to celebrate seniors.
“These student-elected representatives are sharing the desires of their student body and offering diverse points of view on what is important to each of their schools. These conversations have truly been a highlight of our work in navigating this health crisis. Our students are thoughtful, creative, and solution-oriented,” a District official said.
The District’s next steps will be guided by the current executive orders in place.
“At the onset of this crisis, our District established a guiding principle of ensuring the continuity of learning for our students and doing our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” the official said. “It is through this lens that all our decisions are made, including the way in which we will celebrate the Class of 2020.”
