Coronavirus prevents traditional funeral for retired Pickaway County sheriff; procession still planned - Chillicothe Gazette

The coronavirus pandemic means a smaller-scale law enforcement funeral for the man who held the record as the longest-serving sheriff in the country when he retired.

But some traditional elements — with the blessing of local health authorities — will remain for retired Pickaway County Sheriff Dwight Radcliff, who died Wednesday at the age of 87.

Radcliff was the 37th sheriff of Pickaway County, serving 48 years until he chose not to seek re-election in 2012. He was a second-generation sheriff, with his father having served before him. Son Robert “Robbie” Radcliff succeeded him.

There will be public calling hours for Radcliff from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Maxwell Center at Ohio Christian University, 1476 Lancaster Pike in Circleville. The family won’t be able to greet the public, visitors will be required to wear face masks, and social-distancing protocols will be in place, the sheriff’s office said.

A private funeral will take place at the Maxwell Center at noon Wednesday.

Following that, a funeral procession of only Pickaway County law enforcement vehicles will leave the Maxwell Center, passing by a contingent of sheriff’s cruisers from around the state that will be gathered at the Big Lots parking lot on Route 22.

The procession will wind through Circleville on Main, Pickaway and Franklin streets, pausing in remembrance in front of the former county jail/sheriff’s residence at 121 W. Franklin St.

It will continue on to Scioto, Main and Court streets before entering Forest Cemetery. There, a traditional police burial will be held with a helicopter overhead, a bagpiper, a riderless horse, and a taps bugler.

Current Sheriff Radcliff will be presented with the U.S. flag, and he will then present it to his mother, Betty, who was married to her husband for 66 years.

The sheriff asked that those who come out to see the procession wear a mask and keep proper distance out of respect for the rules, as his father would have wanted.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pickaway County Sheriff's Reserve Unit.

A public memorial will be held on a later date, the family said.
