SPOKANE, Wash. — The YMCA has canceled Camp Reed’s traditional summer camps, minicamp and Counselor in Training programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Camp is going to look different this summer, but by no means any less fun,” said Executive Director Phil “Buster” Harrison.
Instead of just kids in cabins, entire families can experience activities and fun at Camp Reed through July and August. Family Camp Rentals will include cabin rental by the week, or weekend, with no restrictions on the number of weeks for families who choose to extend their stay.
Traditional camp activities, like arts and crafts, waterfront activities and campfire time will still be available.
Camp Reed will also offer pop up day camps for children entering the third to ninth grade. These will be three days a week from 1-4 p.m. at the Finch Arboretum. Registration for all programs will first be given to those currently registered for Camp Reed. Information will be released on Wednesday and the signup period will extend through June 10. Registration will open to all on June 11.
Camp Reed is also planning to offer virtual camp programs at no cost. Information on virtual camp has not been released yet, but will be posted on social media.
“We understand the loss we all feel by not running traditional camp and that these changes will feel unfamiliar at first, but as you know, at camp we are resilient and dedicated, and see this as an opportunity to think outside the box, get creative and still deliver on our promise and mission,” Harrison said. “No matter what, camp will be here for our campers, counselors, staff and families, this summer and for as many summers as we can imagine into the future.”
