The following is a letter penned by Eastmont School District Superintendent Garn Christensen:
Dear Parent or Community Member:
Recently I have received multiple emails asking for Eastmont to reopen schools for the 2020-21 school year under traditional operations and full participation. Some of these are also asking that we not require PPE or social distancing.
As with all public services, Eastmont is obligated to provide these educational services under all Washington laws and legal guidelines. Prior to the pandemic, issues involving K-12 Eastmont schools were primarily determined by our local school board and State laws as voted on by our elected officials.
Today, we are operating under a state of emergency. Should we choose to do something other than comply with these guidelines, potential consequences include loss of insurance, suspension of state issued licenses specific to assignments, and responsibility for claims and litigation that may result from COVID-19 exposure on our campuses.
As public employees and elected officials we commit to uphold the laws of Washington when we accept these positions and public offices. Given this obligation, I ask parents and citizens who are asking for the choice to return their students to schools and attend events on campuses as they operated prior to the pandemic to address their concerns to:
- Governor Jay Inslee
- Washington Secretary of Health John Wiesman
- Superintendentof Public Instruction Chris Reykdal
- Senator Brad Hawkins
- Representative Mike Steele
- Representative Keith Goehner
We have been informed by Superintendent Reykdal that a committee of stake holder groups have been formed to determine the requirements for opening schools for the start of 2020-21. If you choose to share your concerns and suggestions, do it now as these guidelines may be finalized and issued by sometime in early June.
