Trenton Times football wrap, week 8: Steinert and Hamilton prepare for traditional Thanksgiving Day meeting - nj.com

The COVID precautions took another big bite out of the statewide football schedule this week and the Times area took its hit as well. Several area teams had games cancelled in Week 8, the last of the current season. Still, seven area teams took the field to wrap their 2020 seasons. Menawhile, two others, Steinert and Hamilton, are prepared to play each other in their traditional Thanklsgiving Day game this coming Thursday.

Allentown (2-6): The Redbirds were winners in their final game of the season, defeating Hopewell Valley 54-48 in Pennington on Friday. The two teams slugged it out on offense with Allentown picking up three fourth quarter touchdowns to come out on top. Quarterback Dan Merkel completed only four passes for 73 yards but he ran for a whopping 290 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries. He scored two of the three final quarter touchdowns on runs of 16 and 29 yards. He also broke off a 53 yard TD run earlier in the game. The Redbirds also got two touchdowns from Parker Schloss, who ran for 95 yards on 10 carries. Aidan Benjamin also ran for a pair of touchdowns.

Bordentown (5-3): The Scotties completed their season at home Friday night, losing to Steinert 17-0. With Bordentown’s top two running backs out of action for most of the game, Omari Owes stepped up and gained 42 yards rushing on nine carries. Quarterback Dennis Morolda ran for 26 yards and threw for 62 more, including a 38 yard reception to Brendon Swanson. Michael Poinsett recoverd a Steinert fumble on the game’s second play from scrimmage.

Florence (3-3): The Flashes ended their season Friday night in Buena, suffering a 33-14 defeat.

Hamilton (2-1): The Hornets were idle this week.

Next game: Thursday, Nov. 26, Steinert, 10:30 a.m.

Hopewell Valley (1-6): The Bulldogs lost at home in their final game of the season on Friday, falling to Allentown 54-48. Quarterback Tim McKeown had a big night for Hopewell Valley completing 14 of 22 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns as well as running for two more touchdowns. New Egypt (3-2): The Warriors closed out their season Friday night by losing at home to Robbinsville 15-2. New Egypt picked up a second quarter safety when the defense forced the Robbinsville punter to step out of bounds in the end zone. The Warriors carried that 2-0 lead into the fourth quarter but could not hold on as Robbinsville scored a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter.

Princeton (1-4): The Little Tigers completed their season with a 30-6 loss on the road at Haddon Township on Saturday. Princeton’s lone score came on an eight yard touchdown pass from Jaxon Petrone to Jaiden Johnson.

Robbinsville (6-1): The Ravens wrapped up their second straight season with only a single loss when they won 15-2 in New Egypt Friday night. Robbinsville trailed 2-0 going into the fourth quarter due to an earlier safety. But the Ravens’ dangerous offense finally came to life in the final period, scoring a pair of touchdowns. Tien-Amir Siplin put Robbinsville in front for good when he ran the ball into the end zone from 10 yards out. Michael Surtz completed the scoring when he caught a 19 yard touchdown pass from Jack Kolbe.

South Hunterdon (4-4): The Eagles finished their season by winning their final three games as they defeated Pingry 33-14 in Lambertville Thursday night.
